When Elijah Shumate stepped off his plane in Texas, there were reports that he was wearing a Notre Dame hat along with his high school teammate, Yuri Wright. The All-American linebacker decided to keep his mouth shut about his selection until game day at the Alamodome. On Saturday afternoon, he officially made his verbal commitment to the Fighting Irish.
There were also hats on the table for Rutgers and South Carolina before Shumate picked up the hat with the interlocking ND. He recently visited schools and cancelled a few trips this month after feeling a sense of home in South Bend.
All American cornerback Yuri Wright traveled with his fellow Don Bosco teammate on that trip to South Bend but has not made a decision yet. He says that Notre Dame is among schools like Michigan, Rutgers, Colorado and Georgia that are still pushing for him. There was a chance that he was going to make a decision at the All-American game, but he decided against it later on. Only time will tell if head coach Brian Kelly will have two recruits from Don Bosco Prep on his defense in the near future.
The Shumate announcement means that Kelly will have 18 commitments for the upcoming recruiting class. The Fighting Irish lost to Florida State in the Champs Sports Bowl on January 29th and will be looking to rebound next year. Having stars like Tyler Eiffert and Manti Te'o return offers a chance for recruits to learn and watch before it is their time to shine.
