Jermain Defoe Makes Appearance as Spurs Head to Wembley

David WilsonJan 6, 2009

It was a great day to be a Tottenham Hotspur fan. First, the team brought England striker Jermain Defoe back from Portsmouth for a reported £15m, one year after he left Spurs to go to Portsmouth. Then Spurs went out and hammered Burnley, 4-1, to all but book their place at Wembley for the Carling Cup Final.

Defoe, who scored 17 goals in 36 games for Portsmouth, will be a good addition for Spurs, who have looked weak up front since Robbie Keane and Dmitiar Berbatov left in the summer.

Defoe was paraded to the Spurs fans before the Burnley game and then sat down and watched Burney dominate the first half and take a deserved lead into half-time.

I don’t know what Harry said at half-time, but it worked, as Spurs came back to score four goals and all but end the tie. They still have to go to Turf Moor for the second leg, but it will take a miraculous effort from Burnley to reach Wembley.

With Manchester United heavy favorites to beat Derby in the other semi-final, this win all but ensures that Spurs will be playing in the UEFA Cup again next season. Now they can concentrate on staying up!
