Less than one week ago, Canadian lacrosse goaltender Chris Sanderson officially lost his fight against cancer.

After a standout career at the University of Virginia, Sanderson moved on to the National Lacrosse League where he served a four-year career for three different franchises.

He was first diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in December of 2008, yet still planned a training schedule around his cancer treatments and was able to make the Canadian National team roster as the No. 1 goalie for the 2010 FIL World Championships in Manchester, England.

Throughout the tournament, Sanderson anchored Canada's defense all the way to the championship game against the United States, which they lost by just two goals.

As if the feat of simply making the team was not enough, Sanderson finished off his prolific tournament with his eyes set on the next tournament in 2014. Via Neil Stevens of The Canadian Press:

"Maybe it’ll be the 2014 world championship...To be honest, I think my wife might kill me before the cancer if I told her that but, just being honest to myself, it’ll probably be something like the 2014 games.”

Lacrosse fans worldwide were tracking Chris' fight with cancer through his page on CaringBridge.org, where Sanderson's family members updated fans and followers on Chris' condition.

Fans made over 60 donations to the family through over 168,000 visits to Chris' page on the website.

Stories like Sanderson's truly provoke the realization that professional sports must be fueled by passion and love, rather than the more popular money and fame.
