We are now officially only two days away from Liverpool’s first match of the 2012-13 Barclays Premier League season, which is a contest against West Bromwich Albion.

This match will be scrutinized extra as it is Brendan Rodgers first game in charge of Liverpool and he has attempted to shake up his roster for much of the offseason.

As the match looms, so does the end of this transfer period. Because of that, Rodgers has been working hard to finalize his roster with several moves.

First on the list, Liverpool is having mixed results after sending managing director Ian Ayre to Spain. Ayre went to Spain to finish deals with both Barcelona winger Cristian Tello along with Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin.

The bad news is that Tello has decided to stay with Barcelona after being guaranteed first-team play next season, which was something the team had been unwilling to do. Liverpool will still likely make an offer within the next few days, but nothing will come of it.

The good news is that Liverpool is almost done with a deal for Sahin, who is leaving Real Madrid after being told that he won’t get much playing time when new midfielder Luka Modric arrives. That became obvious when Sahin found himself playing right-back during the team’s recent U.S. Tour games.

The midfielder was linked with Arsenal, but seems to have decided on Liverpool in part because of a close relationship between Real’s coach Jose Mourinho and Rodgers. He has also been talking to former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso, who has told him all about the advantages of a move to Anfield instead of Arsenal.

The coming of Nuri Sahin also allowed Rodgers to sell midfielder Charlie Adam to Everton for £5 million just a year after he was purchased for £9 million from Blackpool.

This is the first time that a Liverpool player has been sold directly to Everton since Gary Ablett, which was 20 years ago.

In other news, Liverpool is continuing to chase Fulham forward Clint Dempsey, who has been linked to the club for months. A deal was reported by The Daily Mail for £10 million, but that was on July 17th.

Liverpool could really use the forward, who would bolster their offense while bringing in American fans. Dempsey scored 17 goals last season, which puts him in a tie for fourth in the league.

Dempsey has obviously made his preference known, even skipping training camp in Switzerland in an attempt to force a transfer.

Finally, Rodgers has come out and stated that he sees defender Daniel Agger remaining with the club, despite Manchester City’s interest. Furthermore, he said that Agger would like to remain with Liverpool, although the future of Andy Carroll is less obvious.

Hopefully more of this news will become clear over the next two days.
