No Need for Gary Roberts?

Butch ReffertContributor IMarch 7, 2009

Gary Roberts wasn't picked up during the NHL's trading frenzy and the Lightning are on the outside looking in on the postseason.

Last year, Roberts played his gritty veteran role perfectly in the postseason for the Pittsburgh Penguins. This year, veterans like Mark Recchi and Billy Guerin found new teams in March to help add experience to clubs hoping to make deep playoff runs.

Roberts had no such luck and it appears his long and storied career will come to end in early April.

I'm surprised a club like Boston or the Rangers couldn't find a need for someone like Roberts, heading into the playoffs. Roberts offers "old man power"! He's just man strong.

Gary Roberts can still put the puck in the net, especially on the power play, and still instills fear into the majority of players when heading into the corner for a puck.

Of course, he's not worth much over the long haul of the regular season, but I'm baffled no club had found a need for a veteran like Roberts for their playoff run.
