At the 1,000th edition of WWE Monday Night Raw, The Rock returned to television and proposed a match with CM Punk at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

However, The Rock's proposed match was not just an ordinary showdown between the two, but rather for the WWE title.

To the WWE's credit, the company has stuck with its course by not taking the title off of Punk. While it may be tempting to twist the storyline, having Punk remain as an unstoppable champion is key to its success.

This is where The Rock comes into play. If The Rock were to be granted his proposed match with Punk for the WWE title at the Royal Rumble and win, it could mean three things for the company:

Having The Rock become WWE champion would instantly spark interest.

If the WWE elected to place the belt on The Rock, it could provide an instant jolt to the company. Given The Rock's history with the WWE, a championship run would help elevate its flagship show, Monday Night Raw. The WWE could experience higher ratings, more viewership, increases in arena attendance, merchandise sales and more.

Unfortunately, despite how the WWE could generate great interest in its product, The Rock is no longer a full-time wrestler, which could dampen its decision to strip Punk of his hard fought title.

Having The Rock victorious at the Royal Rumble would be only a short-term win for the WWE.

Because of The Rock's part-time schedule, his WWE title reign would be a short one and most likely end at WrestleMania. After WrestleMania, The Rock's chances of disappearing are likely. Despite the strong gains that the WWE could make, it would only be a short-term victory for the company. In order to make this a long gain for the company, The Rock would need to be champion until the fire burns out.

With The Rock as champion, this could mean the development of WWE's biggest feud in history.

The Rock as WWE champion could mean big things for John Cena. If The Rock were champion, the WWE could potentially build its biggest feud in history and have Cena contend for the title at WrestleMania. For the WWE, this is a can't miss scenario.

WWE has a major decision to make if they elect to make a match between The Rock and CM Punk for the title at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Although the benefits are short-term, The Rock could certainly help turn around the WWE's struggles and help create a major storyline heading into WrestleMania.
