Detroit Lions Place Amari Spievey on IR, Activate Drayton Florence

The Detroit Lions placed safety Amari Spievey on season-ending injured reserve Saturday, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. The 24-year-old has not played since suffering a concussion in the Lions’ Week 7 loss to the Chicago Bears.

It was Spievey’s second concussion of the year—the first came in the Lions’ wild-card loss to the New Orleans Saints in January. He also suffered two concussions prior to beginning his NFL career.

Cornerback Drayton Florence has been activated from short-term injured reserve and will play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. He has been out since Week 2 because of a broken forearm.

Florence is faced with the difficult task of shutting down Aaron Rodgers and a talented group of receivers. However, defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham is confident the veteran will perform well, according to the Detroit Free Press.

"He’s an exceptional veteran player," said Cunningham. "He’s like a lot of the older guys I’ve had. He learned to study the game a long time ago and he’s on it. I really like the way he’s moved in practice and he’s going to get a big load. How much, I can’t tell you right now. But we expect him to play and play well."

The 31-year-old veteran is in his 10th NFL season and his first with the Lions. After being drafted by the San Diego Chargers and spending his first five seasons with the team, Florence suited up for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills before signing with the Lions in September.

Florence has 446 tackles, 17 interceptions and three forced fumbles in his career.
