No details on the contract have been released, but ESPN Boston’s Joe McDonald reported that Gomes is rumored to be getting a raise.

Gomes is a veteran outfielder with 10 years of experience in the majors. He made his debut for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2003, but did not receive substantial playing time until 2005. He had the most productive season of his career that year, hitting 21 home runs and batting .282.

After playing with the Rays through the 2008 season, he became a free agent and went on to spend the next two seasons with the Cincinnati Reds

The Reds traded him to the Washington Nationals partway through the 2011 season. His time in the nation’s capital was brief, and he headed west for 2012 after signing a one-year deal with the Oakland Athletics

This past season, Gomes helped the A’s make the playoffs for the first time since 2006 by batting .262 and hitting 18 home runs.

Oakland has a crowded outfield, and as Jane Lee of MLB.com noted, adding Chris Young led to even less space. Boston, however, is looking to add to their corps of outfielders, and Gomes makes an excellent signing.

He has built a reputation throughout his career for being as valuable in the locker room as he is on the diamond. After a tumultuous season, the Red Sox would greatly benefit from adding a high-character player like Gomes.
