CM Punk has been WWE Champion for over one year now and yet he is still the "must-see" guy on WWE programming. Punk has worked with just about every big name in the company since becoming champion and has established himself as the true "Best In The World."
Now while CM Punk will have a major test at TLC against Ryback and then a highly anticipated WWE Title match at the Royal Rumble against The Rock, fans and critics alike are only asking one question. Who will CM Punk face at WrestleMania?
Now just a few months ago, fans were expecting Punk to defend his title against both John Cena and The Rock in a triple threat match which many folks were really anticipating but the WWE decided to steer away from the idea. Now the company has really narrowed the list of worthy opponents for Punk down to two legendary superstars, The Undertaker and WWE Hall of Famer (2009) Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Right now the WWE has Punk being pushed towards facing The Undertaker at the biggest event of the year, according to www.wrestlezone.com:
F4WOnline is reporting that current creative plans could see WWE Champion CM Punk defeating the Rock at the upcoming Royal Rumble in their highly anticipated match, and going on to face the Undertaker at WrestleMania 29 with the championship on the line. One major reason WWE is hesitant to put the belt on the Rock going into WrestleMania, is the lack of title matches at house shows between January and April, as well as the company's Elimination Chamber pay-per-view. According to the report, the WWE's concern for house shows is also a big reason they have not unified the two major World titles, as they feel a championship match should ideally close out each local event.
That report came out on Nov. 21 and it got people buzzing. While Undertaker is a good choice for Punk to face at WrestleMania, it's not the legend they had in mind.
Stone Cold Steve Austin and CM Punk have been linked since CM Punk started in the WWE back in 2006. They have been rebels inside of the ring, on the microphone, and outside of the squared circle. A match between these two has been the "dream match" that the WWE Universe has been dying to see.
The reason that many fans have not taken to the idea so much is because of Austin's health condition. Now while Austin has not had a match since 2003 against The Rock at WrestleMania XIX, he's still not a hundred percent health wise. He has issues with his neck and his nervous system. But Stone Cold explained that he could return if he chose to, in a recent interview on Sirius/XM's Busted Open.
It’s not even about being cleared. I’m 100 percent fine. Once I had my fusion done in 2000 and I went into the recovery phase and then got back in the ring, everything was fine and dandy. I was just running too hard towards the end and had a few issues. It was time to get out. Passing the physical isn’t the issue.
Now wrestling fans will have their own opinion on who CM Punk should face at WrestleMania 29 but I have my opinion and I believe, if it is indeed possible, CM Punk should face Stone Cold Steve Austin to close the show.
Look, The Undertaker has done it all in the industry as he is 20-0 at WrestleMania, but the fact is that he isn't in great physical condition so his in-ring work might be limited at best. Undertaker defeating Punk for the WWE title makes no sense if Taker cannot work house shows or appear weekly on WWE television.
Now while I say that, I also do not feel like Punk should be the guy to end the streak. Undertaker has done so much for the industry so I feel that maybe he should not even compete at WrestleMania 29 as the 30th anniversary show will be huge and that could be the perfect stage for The Undertaker's curtain call.
Stone Cold isn't as good as he once was, but he's still got one or two more really good matches left in the tank. Austin can still generate a fan reaction that so very few can, so having him face off against the top heel in the past five years would make this feud a hit with the fans. The buy rate would be huge with Austin's in-ring return against a guy whose becoming a legend himself.
Now I don't see CM Punk losing at WrestleMania against anyone as it wouldn't make sense to see the WWE tear down a title reign 16 months in the making to a guy whose probably going to wrestle only one or two more times before walking away for good. I believe Austin would be OK to put over Punk as legends usually want to contribute to the industry and solidifying CM Punk as the top guy of this generation would be the perfect situation for Stone Cold to come back and wrestle.
Punk could be champion until next November when it is his two year anniversary, but anyway you look at it, he is the cash cow for the company and he will continue to be pushed as the man. WrestleMania 29 will be CM Punk's coming out party, the only question really left is, against who?
