One significant year in Independent baseball, and Jason Lane is back in the big leagues. During the winter meetings, the Minnesota Twins signed Jason Lane to a minor league deal.
I profiled Lane in August, who at the time was named pitcher of the month for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League.
Lane’s signing was detailed on the Skeeters’ website, and he couldn’t thank them enough for the opportunity they provided for him:
I would like to thank the Skeeters organization for the opportunity to be a part of their first season. It was another great experience in my career and a great opportunity to continue my journey back to the big leagues. From the front office, to the coaching staff, to my teammates and the fans, thank you for all the support. Sugar Land has something special with the Skeeters and I will never forget what it did for me.
Lane, a pitcher while at USC, flourished on the mound for the Skeeters, going 9-5 with a 3.17 ERA while leading the team in innings pitched with over 110. At the plate he batted .275 with nine home runs and 31 RBI in 79 games.
It’s unclear what role Lane will play with Twins, but according to Skeeters manager Gary Gaetti, Lane has proved his worth as a pitcher: "'He definitely proved that he can pitch at a very high level last year. He has earned this opportunity to pitch again and be back in Major League baseball,' said Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti, who was a two-time All-Star (1988-89) and earned four Rawlings Gold Glove Awards during a 10-year Major League stint with the Twins.”
Lane is not the only Skeeter on the radar of MLB teams.
Former first-round pick Scott Kazmir is currently in Puerto Rico and has been raising some eyebrows with his performance. According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman (h/t SB Nation), he has been touching 94 MPH on the radar gun—a significant increase from a couple seasons ago.
If the Skeeters keep this up, and continue to foster and cultivate MLB talent, this Indy franchise—going into their second year—could be a force for many years to come.
