Will CM Punk's Knee Surgery End His Historically Long Title Run?

Alfred KonuwaFeatured ColumnistDecember 11, 2012

CM Punk has gone under the knife and is expected to miss time.  In the midst of one of the greatest WWE title runs of the modern era, CM Punk will be unable to defend the WWE championship moving forward.

So will Punk’s looming injury hurt his long WWE title reign?

Punk’s status as a heel and an agitator is conducive to milking an injury to get out of defending a championship.  But from a historical perspective—when his title reign is compared to the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and John Cena—the lack of activity could devalue Punk’s reign.

CM Punk still has yet to defeat Ryback in clean fashion.  Now, a would-be third encounter has been derailed by knee surgery, further complicating Punk’s reign.

The storyline surrounding CM Punk should be entertaining per usual from the heel champion.  Punk’s next title defense could come against The Rock.  Should The Rock win, red flags concerning CM Punk’s title reign could ensue.
