Grading Michigan's New Special Uniforms for 2013 Outback Bowl

Michigan has embraced the uniform craze that has taken over college football the past few seasons. After bringing out throwback styles in previous games, the Wolverines have announced that they will wear new uniforms for the Outback Bowl on January 1.

The uniform changes were voted on by seniors and coaches, marking another special moment in Michigan uniform history.

Let's take a look at the jersey and helmet changes and grade them.

Jersey

The new jersey that Michigan will wear brings subtle changes that are similar to the uniforms that were worn during the season opener against Alabama.

The new top will be white with blue across the shoulders, and the traditional "M" will be set on the sleeves in maize.

The names will be large block blue letters, with numbers appearing in maize with blue trim.

The front will have the Outback Bowl, Big Ten and Adidas logos. Besides the color of the number, the front looks much the same.

The quote "It's Great To Be A Michigan Wolverine" is also stitched into the neck of the jersey.

Overall, these are clean and carry a traditional appeal. The bright maize numbers are a great change, as is the shift to the all-blue shoulder look.

Grade: A

Helmet

The Michigan helmet will be the traditional maize wings set on a matte blue helmet.

I am not sure what the fascination is with the matte look, but most of the time it looks bad and unfinished. Michigan shouldn’t have gone with this look.

The helmet won’t look much different if at all, but the matte was a bad move. It dulls down the look and takes away from the clean appeal of the new jersey.

Grade: C

Overall

From top to bottom, the change in the uniform was done in good taste and looks solid.

The Wolverines could have gone without the matte finish, but it is the trendy thing to do, so you can’t blame them for following the lead of virtually every other uniform change in football this year.

The maize numbers are the most appealing part of the uniform, bringing a new look to the uniform without killing Michigan tradition.

The subtle changes are likely to sit better with traditionalists as well. Michigan did well with the new look, but the matte finish leads to a drop in grading.

Overall, the Wolverines got it right with this change. Keep it traditional with a few moderate changes.

Grade: B
