The Minnesota Vikings gave their fans a lovely Valentine's Day gift as they updated the classic Norseman logo with more detail to the features and more vibrant color, all while keeping the integrity of the original logo intact.
Why the change? A press release Thursday explained, "As the Vikings transition into the drafting of plans for the new stadium and the prevalent Norseman usage throughout that facility, the team realized this is the appropriate time to make these logo enhancements. The evolution will not happen overnight; Vikings fans can expect to see both versions of the logo during the transition period, but the enhanced mark will be noticeable immediately throughout vikings.com."
For those Vikings fans that really wanted to read into the subtleties of this release, bigger news came next, but required some speculation.
"We are looking forward to many exciting changes for our team and fans in the next few years, leading up to the opening of our new stadium. These logo enhancements are just the beginning..."
Though this suggestion does not actually give up any information about what these upcoming "plans" are, the popular rumors this offseason have been that the Vikings will be updating their uniforms for the 2013 season as well.
When the Vikings released their current uniforms in 2006, reaction was mixed as they moved to a much more contemporary look than the fanbase was used to—something that, in my opinion, alienated them from the rest of one of the most classic divisions in the NFL.
If the rumors are true, I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to see them go to a much more classic look. Their current throwback uniforms are about as good as it comes with a classic look, but I would have a hard time believing they would put that little effort into designing a completely new uniform.
Personally, I would like to see a design much like LSU's timeless uniforms. Though the Tigers use a different shade of purple, the contrast of the vibrant gold stripes—which would be reflective of the updated logo—in a very classic design against the deep purple jersey would give the longest tenured Vikings fan everything he could want in a new design.
That, along with the raised stripes, would reflect the away uniforms the Vikings wore prior to the 2006 update. This combination would not only give Vikings fans a classic look, but something they have not seen before—which would kill two birds with one stone for owner Zygi Wilf.
