Jack Swagger returned to WWE a few weeks ago and brought with him a right-wing, pro-American mouthpiece by the name of Zeb Colter. In just a few weeks, Jack Swagger's "All-American" character, which had become so tired a few months back before his hiatus, feels completely revitalized. A win in the Elimination Chamber solidified him as a main event threat who deserves a high spot on the WrestleMania 29 card.
Alberto Del Rio came into WWE with a big push as the aristocratic heel. He was given an underwhelming World Heavyweight Title reign. His potential seemed to reach a premature climax. After losing the title, he battled a few injuries and found himself in storylines that didn't match the level of exposure he had enjoyed in his early career. Then, in a somewhat logic-defying decision, WWE turned Del Rio into a babyface character. That gave him a shot of energy and another run with the World Title.
At WrestleMania, Swagger and Del Rio will collide. For all intents and purposes, Swagger will portray the Old White Way — a section of Americans that can be stereotyped as anti-immigrant. On the other side of the ring will be Del Rio, an immigrant who is living the American Dream.
This match reminds me a lot of the main event of WrestleMania 7 between Hulk Hogan and Sgt. Slaughter. With the Persian Gulf War in full swing, Slaughter was an Iraqi sympathizer who burned the American flag and represented an extremist point of view. Hogan played the hero fighting on the side of opportunity and freedom for all. The match took a very polarizing political situation and exploited it for the benefit of WWE fans. It was done so effectively that it has since been documented that Sgt. Slaughter and his family received death threats in the months leading up WrestleMania. Vince McMahon and WWE had to hire security to ensure his safety.
Our country is divided. Arenas all over the world will be made of people who side with Del Rio and Swagger. As long as certain boundaries are pushed and not crossed, I expect this to be one of the hottest storylines leading into WrestleMania.
