College Basketball Picks: Wake Forest at Florida State Betting Odds

Doc Moseman@DocsSportsCorrespondent IFebruary 25, 2013

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the Florida State Seminoles will both be looking to improve their current spot in the ACC standings when they clash this Tuesday night at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Game time is set for 9 p.m. (ET) ,and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.

The Demon Deacons stunned the college basketball world this past Saturday with a highly-unlikely 80-65 victory over then-No.2 Miami as seven-point underdogs at home. They will now have to go on the road where they are just 1-9 this season. Wake Forest is 12-14 SU overall and above .500 against the spread at 15-8-1.

Florida State (14-13 SU and 9-15-1 ATS) has just one SU victory in its last five games and is 1-8-1 ATS in its last 10 games. This past Sunday, the Seminoles hit rock bottom with a 80-70 loss to Virginia Tech as two-point road favorites. It was just the Hokies third SU win all season in ACC play.

Wake Forest at Florida State Betting Storylines

Wake Forest is not going anywhere this postseason unless lightning strikes twice in the ACC Tournament, but it does bring a ton of momentum into this contest after Saturday’s big win. The team as a whole is averaging 67.5 points a game and shooting 43.5 percent from the field. It is ranked in the bottom-third of Division I in rebounds with just 33.3 a game. Defense has not been the Demon Deacons strong suit this season, especially on the road, where they are allowing an average of 73.6 points a game.

Offensively, CJ Harris and Travis McKie have led the way with a combined 29.3 points a game. Harris is shooting 47.2 percent from the floor and an impressive 42.3 percent from three-point range. McKie is also one of the team’s top rebounders with 7.5 a game. The production drops off steeply from there with just two other players averaging more than eight points a game.

The Seminoles' slide has dropped them to 6-8 SU in ACC play. You are never quite sure what you are going to get from this team on a game-to-game basis. They are averaging 67.4 points and shooting 44.1 percent from the field, but they have been held well under that number in seven of their last 11 games.

Michael Snaer and Okaro White have been the two-man show for Florida State this season. Snaer leads the team with 14 points a game and is second in rebounds (4.5) and first in assists (2.5). White is the Seminoles second-leading scorer with 12.4 points while leading the team in rebounds with 5.9 a game. Florida State has been even worse than Wake Forest on the boards with an average of 30.9 rebounds a game.

Wake Forest at Florida State Betting Odds and Trends by BetOnline

BetOnline has opened the Seminoles as 5.5-point favorites at home for this ACC matchup. However, it has yet to set the total line for the game.

The Demon Deacons are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following a SU win and 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games overall. The total has gone “over” in four of their last five games played on a Tuesday.

The Seminoles are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven games following a SU loss and 0-5-1 ATS in their last six home games. The total has gone over in seven of their last 11 Tuesday games.

Head-to-head in this matchup, the favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings, and the total has stayed under in three of the last five meetings. Wake Forest destroyed Florida State 71-46 as a three-point home underdog when they met earlier this month. The total stayed “under” the 139-point line in that game.

College Basketball Picks: Wake Forest at Florida State Betting Predictions

The Seminoles will no doubt be looking to avenge that lopsided road loss to Wake Forest on their home court this Tuesday night, but the current form of this team tells me that this time around will remain painfully close until the final buzzer. Florida State may actually come out with the SU win, but the play remains on the Demon Deacons to at the very least cover with the 5.5 points.

Take # 537 Wake Forest (+5.5) over Florida State (Tuesday, Feb.26, 9 p.m.)
