Tampa Bay Rays star pitcher and American League Cy Young Award winner David Price is the deserved selection on the cover of the new-look MLB 2K13 game.

It might only be a video game and not an official statement on the rankings of top players in the game, but Price's selection as the one of the hottest stars of the game and a future face of baseball is certainly something that those behind the decision got correct.

Price is a true star of the MLB following his stellar 2012 season.

The first overall pick in the 2007 draft, Price showed his true worth for the Rays last year with a 20-5 record, 2.56 ERA and 1.10 WHIP—all of which were career-low numbers for the 27-year-old. The fact that he earned those numbers playing in the AL East division, against some of the top teams in baseball, make those numbers even more ridiculous.

He earned the selection for the 2012 AL Cy Young Award as a result, and enters 2013 with a legitimate chance to have an even stronger year.

Which makes him a perfect selection for the cover of MLB 2K13.

Price's spring training appearances have shown him to be disciplined and switched on already—not waiting for the first few games of the season to warm up.

"That's just not the way I operate," said Price, when questioned about his preseason dominance (per The Washington Post). "I’m not good enough to just flip a switch. April is less than a month away—I'm not that kind of person [who takes pre-season lackadaisically]".

If he can carry that from into the regular season, which it seems he no doubt will, and chalk up some big numbers in 2013, then his selection on the cover makes perfect sense—especially if he can improve on what he has achieved in 2012.

Which, according to those around him, is likely to happen (per ESPN):

"The most impressive thing about David," says Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman, "is he’s gotten better every single year.

"In 2010, he was better than '09. In '11, he was better than '10. In '12, he was better than '11. You can’t ask for much more than that. And the scary thing is, as good as he was last year, I still think there’s more upside there."

Maybe 2013 won't be the only year we see Price on the cover.
