While Arsenal may very well earn a Champions League place this season, one thing has become abundantly clear this year: The Gunners are not an elite squad. And that means this summer, the team must add some high-end talent.
While the Gunners will almost certainly actively pursue strikers, adding a holding midfielder is arguably the team's biggest need. So it's no surprise that the team is supposedly interested in Sevilla youngster Geoffrey Kondogbia.
From Charlie Wyett of The Sun:
Kondogbia, 20, only arrived in Spanish football from Lens last summer.
[Arsene] Wenger said: 'I don't really want to talk about Kondogbia too much because everyone's after him at the moment.'
'When you ask 'Are you also interested?' what do you expect me to say?'
Mikel Arteta has been very solid this season, but he's not a true holding midfielder and would be best served playing further up the pitch. Abou Diaby has shown flashes in the role when he can stay healthy, but at this point he can't be relied upon.
But Kondogbia would sure look good in the role. He's a big, physical player who would be excellent supporting the defense, but he's also shown an ability to storm forward on the attack. He's surprisingly nimble for a man his size and looks like a player who should continue to add a few goals per season to his tally, especially on set pieces.
Kondogbia has the athleticism to cover a lot of ground defensively and could be the physical presence Arsenal craves in a box-to-box midfielder. His cover would allow Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla to play further up the pitch without worrying as much about their defensive responsibilities.
Plus, at just 20 years of age, he would be a part of Arsenal's young core that also features Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey and Kieran Gibbs.
Kondogbia has started 23 games in all competitions for Sevilla this season and made 32 total experiences, so he should be able to hit the ground running in the Premier League. And seeing as Arsenal has a huge hole at the defensive midfielder position, Kondogbia would have plenty of opportunities to prove his worth.
He'll be a highly desired player this summer, so it may be a longshot for Arsenal to acquire his services. But without question, he should be one of the team's primary targets.
He would be the perfect fit.
