It's official: CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.
Ever since Lesnar attacked Punk the night after Payback just over a month ago, we've pretty much known this battle was going to take place at the company's marquee pay-per-view.
But on Monday, following yet another terrific segment between Punk and Paul Heyman, it became definite. SummerSlam's official Twitter account gave us the confirmation:
"The Best vs. The Beast," of course, was coined by Punk himself during his most recent promo on Monday night, but we'll get to that in a second.
Although the groundwork was laid a month ago, this feud seriously took off during last week's Money in the Bank pay-per-view when Heyman—Punk's now-former manager—betrayed his client and smashed him with a ladder, thus costing him a shot at the WWE Championship contract.
The following night, Punk and Heyman put on one of the most memorable, energetic, captivating segments of the year, ending with Lesnar crashing the scene and doing a number on Punk.
That brings us to this Monday night, with Punk looking for vindication:
It's difficult not to be enthralled by this feud.
Punk and Heyman are two of (if not the) best in the business on the microphone, and every single time they duke it out with words, anticipation only grows.
Inside the ring, you've got Punk, easily one of the most popular and talented full-time superstars in the business, taking on Lesnar, who is one of the biggest part-time draws in the company and an absolutely frightening machine who bares some impressive strength.
It's intriguing from a storyline point of view, too, as Punk, a former world champion, has somehow become an underdog unwilling to back down from anything—even the Beast Incarnate.
John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan, the most over superstar in the business, for the WWE title will be the main event at SummerSlam.
But I think it's safe to call Punk vs. Lesnar the co-main event.
