Lionel Messi, Mario Balotelli and Other Soccer Stars Meet the Pope

Tristan ThornburghSocial Media StaffAugust 14, 2013

The Italian and Argentinian national soccer teams are in Italy for an upcoming friendly, but they took some time out of their preparation to meet with Pope Francis I in the Vatican beforehand.

The Pope, who is Argentinian and a soccer fan, was presented with jerseys from both teams after they posed with players at a private meeting.

Argentinian star Lionel Messi made his very first Instagram post to honor the occasion.

Pope Francis wouldn't add if he was rooting for his home country or not, but said, "Luckily it's a friendly match."

Hat tip to FTW and The Independent on the find.
