Despite today's rumors that he may be headed elsehwere, Liverpool must do whatever it takes to sign Brazilian star Willian before the transfer window comes to a close.

A report from BBC this afternoon seems to indicate that the Reds have missed out on Willian, and that he is set to accept a deal with fellow Premier League contenders Tottenham Hotspur.

But losing Willian to the Spurs would be a huge blow for Liverpool, as it would bolster one of their biggest rivals for Premier League glory, while leaving them without a potential option in the midfield to improve their attack and deliver spectacular set pieces.

The attacking midfielder, who is currently contracted to Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia, already has three assists in four games in the Russian Premier League and was named's Man of the Match twice already this season.

Liverpool already have a few decent attacking options, but adding Willian would provide a creative flair to the midfield to compliment Philippe Coutinho and veteran Steven Gerrard. And with the uncertainty surrounding star striker Luis Suarez, adding creative players capable of scoring goals should be a top priority for the Reds.

As well, the wealth of talent already in the attacking midfield at White Hart Lane makes Willian a better fit at Anfield with Liverpool. Aaron Lennon, Nacer Chadli, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Mousa Dembélé and the aforementioned Bale are already in the mix for Tottenham, while youngster Raheem Sterling and disappointing Jordan Henderson are both worthy of being replaced on a team with Champions League aspirations like Liverppol.

As BBC Sports' David Ornstein tweeted this morning, Spurs may be willing to do whatever it takes to sign Willian to ensure that they have a replacement for world-class winger Gareth Bale. But Liverpool must consider how it will replace the attacking prowess of aging Gerrard and troublemaker Luis Suarez in the future.

Allowing Willian to sign anywhere else would be a huge loss for the Reds and would certainly decrease their chances of making a run at the Premier League title this season. Contenders Manchester City, Chelsea, and now Tottenham all seem prepared to spend what is needed to bolster their attacks, while Liverpool is being passed by, and it may cost them a chance at silverware this season.
