Rafael Nadal moves thunderously into his Saturday semifinal against Richard Gasquet and will more than likely have the familiar support from the stands of Xisca Perello.
Nadal is cruising at the moment and hopes that momentum finds him well into the finals at the U.S. Open.
While there are volumes on Nadal, the woman who has been by his side for nearly a decade continues to be a mystery.
As The Huffington Post recently noted, she rarely gives interviews and stays clear of reporters that usually flock to her famous boyfriend.
In a peculiar twist, one of the most recognizable figures in sport is dating one of the most mysterious. It's a wonderful treat that both have been able to keep their romance private, a luxury rarely afforded a superstar or his significant other.
However, The Daily Mail was able to get some words from a woman they report works for an insurance company.
She has been with the 27-year-old star since the two were teenagers, and is careful to let Nadal have his time to concentrate on tennis when needed.
She explained: 'Traveling together everywhere, even if I could, would not be good either for him or for me.’
'He needs his space when he is competing, and just the idea of me hanging around waiting on his needs all day wears me out. It would asphyxiate me.
And then he would have to be worrying about me … No. If I followed him everywhere, I think there’s a risk we might stop getting along.'
It would be easy for the two to buy into the hype and delve into the idea of their celebrity status. Instead, eight years later, the two are amazingly grounded.
The Huffington Post reports Perello was good friends with Nadal's sister, Isabel, back when she was studying business administration in college.
Years later, amid the spotlight that still manages to catch her at various tournaments, she is very much her own person.
We have seen so many celebrity couples split after having their romances play out in the public eye. Perhaps Nadal and Perello are onto something here.
