Gerrit Cole's first career start against the St. Louis Cardinals went better than he expected as he helped the Pittsburgh Pirates level their National League Division Series with the Cardinals at 1-1.

Cole, who was dominant on the mound in six innings, got the ball rolling at the plate for the Buccos with an RBI single in the second inning.

The Pirates would go on to methodically pick apart the seven different St. Louis pitchers by scoring runs in five different innings.

Pedro Alvarez homered for the second consecutive game in third inning while Starling Marte finished off the victory with a solo shot off of reliever Shelby Miller in the eighth.

In between the two home runs, Marlon Byrd's RBI double and Russell Martin's RBI single helped extend the lead during a rally in the fifth inning.

Yadier Molina scored the lone run for the Cardinals as he hit a solo home run in the fifth inning off of Cole.

The series will now move to PNC Park where the two ballclubs will square off in Game 3 on Sunday.

St. Louis will send Joe Kelly to the mound while the hero of the NL Wild Card Game, Francisco Liriano, will pitch for the Pirates.
