Tom Pelissero of USA Today reported that the star running back will be heading to Philadelphia during the next week:

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is scheduled to visit Philadelphia-based specialist Dr. William Meyers next week to evaluate his troublesome groin and decide if surgery is needed, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports on Saturday.

Peterson, 28, missed two of the Vikings' last three games because of the groin as well as a foot injury and dropped out of the Pro Bowl last week.

He originally hurt the groin back in November in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The good news is that Peterson has an entire offseason with which to recover should he have to go under the knife. According to Pelissero, an abductor release is one option, which would keep the star running back out for a few months.

Should that be the course of action taken, Peterson would have plenty of time to get back to full health and return for training camp.

This situation doesn't appear to be anywhere near as serious as the torn ACL he suffered near the end of the 2011 season. And Peterson bounced back from that injury by rushing for 2,097 yards in 2012.

Given his previous injury history and importance to the Vikings, Minnesota will no doubt take every precaution possible with Peterson's health.
