The former Crystal Palace winger joined Manchester United last season for £10 million and was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson. But the skillful winger has seen his chances limited at Old Trafford with his time limited to the substitutes bench.
The wily winger scored eight goals and provided 10 assists last season for Crystal Palace, per ESPN stats. But according to Riath Al-Samarrai in the Daily Mail, David Moyes has had problems with the young winger.
Manchester United signed Juan Mata on Monday with that transfer sending the winger further down the pecking order. Mata is being seen as the world-class signing United have needed all season which they hope will send them further up the table and into the Champions League spots.
There is no doubting that Zaha has raw talent. He was instrumental in Crystal Palace getting to the Premier League this season, but with Ferguson retiring, he signed a player who had hoped to have worked with the most successful manager in Manchester United's history.
Instead, Zaha has arrived at the club at a time of transition as manager Moyes tries to implement his identity of the club. Moyes has chopped and changed his United team on countless occasions as he tries to find the best formation and formula for his team, and Zaha has been left to watch from the sidelines.
Zaha would have been hoping that his dream move to Manchester United would have been more of a success but the player has been let down. He has only played twice for Manchester United in the Premier League this season and with United struggling, the young player will be considering if he made the right decision moving to Old Trafford.
Instead of calling upon Zaha, Moyes has used another United starlet in young Adnan Januzaj and instead depended on Antonio Valencia and occasionally Danny Welbeck on the wings, meaning Zaha doesn't feature in the new United manager's plans.
According to Daniel Jones in the Metro, there have been some problems at Old Trafford as the manager refused to trust the young winger in the United team:
The latest reports from Manchester suggest Zaha was dropped from a reserve game on Monday night after arriving late for the meet-up with the squad. This isn’t the first time the player’s casual approach has landed him in trouble either – his arrival in jeans, trainers and a T-shirt, rather than the club suit, for a pre-season tour hardly got his Old Trafford career off to a flying start.
Zaha has used social media to post updates about his frustrations of not getting enough games under Moyes this season. Using Twitter and Instagram, Zaha has posted updates like:
The United manager said in a statement on ManUtd.com:
With Wilfried Zaha, I'd said to him during the summer that we wanted to get him games. If he played, then great, but if he couldn't, we'd get him out on loan. We had one or two offers for him but just felt Cardiff, at this moment in time, might be the right club. With Ole going there as well, he knows how the club works here and exactly what we do with the players so hopefully it will be a good move for Wilf.
Zaha will now be hoping that former Manchester United star Ole Gunnar Solskjær will be able to save his career as he joins Cardiff City. The Welsh club are struggling and are bottom of the Premier League table. For Zaha, the challenge will be keeping Cardiff up, but he just needs to be playing football on a regular basis again.
