UFC 169: Aldo vs. Lamas Round-by-Round Recap and Analysis

    Jose Aldo defended his UFC Featherweight Championship against Ricardo Lamas in the co-main event of UFC 169.

    The champion made an eighth successful title defense against the No. 2-ranked fighter in the division. The win gives Aldo a win over each of the top five ranked challengers in the division.

    Lamas was unable to take the title, but was in the fight until the bitter end.

Round 1

    They touch gloves, and we are underway.

    Lamas opens with a low leg kick. And another. Lamas is circling on the outside as Aldo looks for an opening. Aldo tries a combination, but Lamas covers up well. Aldo checks a Lamas kick. Aldo trying to cut off the cage. Aldo checks another low leg kick. Aldo is being much more conservative early on.

    Big combination from Aldo, and he finishes with a leg kick as Lamas moves away. Spinning back kick to the midsection from Aldo just barely connects. Aldo catches a leg kick, and he moves in with big shots to the body. Aldo digs to the body with a left.

    Aldo finishes the round with a flurry, but Lamas covers up.

    Aldo establishes himself in the center of the cage, and Lamas continues throwing kicks.

    Fantastic punch-kick combination from Aldo. The leg kick landed flush. Lamas covers up as Aldo comes forward, and Aldo lands two punches to the midsection. Lamas throws an overhand right, but Aldo blocks it. Aldo is simply picking his shots against Lamas.

    A big leg kick from Aldo turns the hip of Lamas. Lamas throws, Aldo ducks and counters. The famous Aldo leg kicks are starting to add up on Lamas. A big leg kick lands from Aldo. Lamas' entire body turned.

    Lamas throws a high kick, but Aldo avoided the damage. Lamas is starting to favor the leg now. Aldo lands another. Spinning wheel kick attempt by Lamas is blocked.

    Lamas is still throwing leg kicks, but no takedown attempts yet. A questionable strategy thus far from the challenger against one of the best strikers in the sport.

    Aldo lands another strong leg kick. Fantastic combination by Aldo. He started it with a leg kick, followed up with punches and finished with another big leg kick.

    Lamas tries to shoot in, but Aldo easily thwarts the attempt. Aldo lands another outside leg kick. Aldo counters with a low outside leg kick. Aldo reads every strike from Lamas very well. Aldo digs to the body with a left, and chops with a right outside leg kick. Brutal stuff from the champion.

    Lamas is beginning to touch Aldo with a few strikes, but they are not damaging him. Aldo catches a leg kick. Lamas lands a body kick toward the end of the round.

    They open the same as the previous three rounds.

    Aldo lands another big leg kick. Lamas shots in, grabs a leg and forces him to the cage. Aldo is defending very well, but Lamas is staying on that leg. Aldo fights for underhooks and turns Lamas' back against the fence. Aldo trips Lamas to the mat.

    Aldo looking for an arm-triangle, but Lamas sees it coming and Aldo abandons it. Lamas tries to fight to full guard, but Aldo prevents it. They are in half-guard. Lamas uses butterfly guard, Aldo hops over it to mount! Lamas gives up his back. Aldo goes for a rear-naked choke, but it's on the chin.

    Lamas gets out, and immediately takes a leg to try and take Aldo down. Aldo defends the takedown.Aldo lands elbows to the side of Lamas' head.

    Lamas out quickly. He takes the center of the cage.

    They clinch, and it's Aldo who forces Lamas' back against the fence. Aldo trips Lamas to the mat.

    Lamas is locking up the right arm of Aldo, but Aldo recognizes it and forces Lamas to abandon the arm. Aldo mounts. Lamas uses the cage to escape from bottom. In a scramble, Lamas gets top position with over two minutes to work.

    Lamas trying to throw some ground and pound, but Aldo avoids damage and ties him up. Lamas lands an elbow. Lamas postures up as Aldo tries to regain control. Lamas lands another short strike. Lamas lands the elbow again. Lamas is doing good work, but there is not enough of it nor is it doing enough damage. Aldo still defending well.
