It was a rough week for Americans playing abroad, as injuries struck a number of key players, including Aron Johannsson, Timmy Chandler and Jermaine Jones.

They weren’t the only ones hit by the injury bug—there are also updates on a number of other injured Americans, including John Anthony Brooks, Eric Lichaj, Oguchi Onyewu and Jonathan Spector.

And, in brighter news, Juan Agudelo opened up his goal-scoring account in Europe (video below).

The Premier League Boys

Jozy Altidore played 90 minutes against Hull City, but Sunderland fell 2-0 and certainly weren’t helped in their effort with a red card to Wes Brown in the fourth minute.

Geoff Cameron went the distance as Stoke City tied Southampton 2-2.

Clint Dempsey didn’t make the squad for Fulham’s match against Manchester United.

Brad Guzan was in the net for Aston Villa’s 2-0 loss to West Ham.

Tim Howard and Everton lost to Tottenham 1-0.

Ze Germans

Timmy Chandler was taken off in the 10th minute of Nurnberg’s 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich with what was reported by Matthew Wagner of the Tribune Chronicle as a torn meniscus.  Earlier in the week, United States men’s national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann had mentioned on that Chandler was still in the running for U.S. World Cup roster spot.

John Anthony Brooks wasn’t a part of Hertha Berlin’s match with Hamburger SV, but it was reported on the club's official website (via Dan Karell of Soccer By Ives) this week that he is back in full training after suffering a knee injury a few weeks back.

Fabian Johnson was an unused substitute for Hoffenheim in their 1-1 draw with Freiburg.

In Bundesliga 2, Bobby Wood and 1860 Munich get back to action on Monday.

In the English Championship

Jonathan Spector has been out injured since October, but Colin Tattum of Birmingham Mail reported this week that he is only about a week away from returning to action. In Birmingham’s 2-0 win over Charlton, Will Packwood put in 90 minutes at center-back for the third week in a row.

After a bright start at Sheffield Wednesday, Oguchi Onyewu has injured his calf and will miss the next several weeks. Without him, Wednesday beat Danny Williams’ Reading 2-0 with Williams playing 65 minutes.

Brek Shea played the first half of Barnsley’s 2-2 draw with Ipswich but was the lowest-rated player on the pitch for Barnsley.

Bolton tied Bournemouth 2-2. Tim Ream went the distance for the Wanderers. Stuart Holden is still recovering from injury.

Eric Lichaj is injured and will apparently be out for a number of weeks, according to Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies (via Josh Deaver).

Duane Holmes didn’t make the squad for Huddersfield this week.

Elsewhere in Europe

Aron Johannsson scored a goal midweek and set up another but then was forced to come out at halftime with a thigh injury. He missed AZ Alkmaar’s game this weekend.

Also midweek, Juan Agudelo opened up his account in Europe with a goal against PEC Zwolle. He also went the distance in Utrecht’s weekend game against Waalwijk.

Jermaine Jones injured his groin and will miss at least two weeks with his new club in Turkey.

Terrence Boyd missed Rapid Vienna’s match this weekend due to a red-card suspension.

Sacha Kljestan did not play for Anderlecht this weekend. It marks the third week in a row he’s made the bench but not seen the field.

Alejandro Bedoya was not in the 18 for Nantes and their 2-1 loss to Lyon.

Mix Diskerud, Josh Gatt and Conor O’Brien are all still on winter break with their respective clubs.

South of the Border

Tijuana beat Monterrey 2-1 with Edgar Castillo and Herculez Gomez starting. Castillo went the distance and Gomez played 61 minutes. Joe Corona came on for the final 13 minutes; Greg Garza and Paul Arriola didn’t make it off the bench.

Benji Joya will play for the Chicago Fire this year after going on loan from parent club Santos Laguna this week.

Jose Torres didn’t make it off the bench for Tigres’ 1-1 draw with Santos.

DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Orozco and Puebla play Sunday.
