A sellout crowd filled Reliant Stadium Sunday, hoping to find a new Texans team after years of embarrassment and frustration.
With a 20-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, coach Gary Kubiak's team sent the fans home happy.
The Houston defensive line, one of the most talked about in the league, held Larry Johnson to just 43 yards on 10 attempts.
If that wasn't enough, controversial first-pick Mario Williams made five tackles, including two sacks. He also returned a fumble 38 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter.
New Texans quarterback Matt Schaub was 16 of 22 for 225 yards and one touchdown, faring better than Chiefs QB Damon Huard, who threw for only 168 yards with two interceptions.
Schaub's go-to man was Pro-Bowler Andre Johnson, who recorded seven receptions for 142 yards and one touchdown—all from a quarterback who has only ever played sparingly in the regular season.
The biggest weak spot for the Texans was their running game. Ron Dayne and the newly-acquired Ahman Green ran for 33 and 73 yards, respectively.
At least both players performed better than Larry Johnson, who was projected to help carry the Chiefs to a victory.
Texans fans have reason to celebrate today, but they shouldn't get carried away. Remember, the Texans won their first game against Dallas in 2003, when David Carr posted good numbers in his first career start.
Still, the new faces in Houston should definitely help the franchise achieve much more success in the next five years than it did in the last five.
