After the dramatic events of last week, which culminated in the joyous scene of Ryan Giggs leading Manchester United to a 4-0 victory, can the transfer rumours and news this week live up to their predecessor?

They will certainly have a go. Check back throughout the week for the latest.

We start this week on the subject of the new boss.

    Updated Sunday 4 May 2014

Louis Van Gaal Wants to Be Announced

    Michael Kienzler

Neil Custis, writing in The Sun (subscription required), says Louis van Gaal wants United to name him as the team's new boss this week.

Given Giggs' popularity, it would presumably be wise for United to act quickly if they are to install someone else as boss.

Juan Mata Wants Giggsy

In spite of not being selected in Giggs' inaugural first XI, Juan Mata has backed the Welshman to lead United, per the Metro.

Mata said, "He was very successful here as a player and now he is leading the team. We are all happy because who is better to do it?"

Van Gaal Wants Kroos and Strootman

Paul Hetherington, in the Daily Star, reports that Van Gaal wants current United target Toni Kroos and perennial United target Kevin Strootman to join him should he take over at Old Trafford.

The report also runs the rule over other managerial candidates at United and suggests Van Gaal would keep Giggs on staff should he take over.

Van Gaal Wants Hummels and Reus

Meanwhile, Simon Mullock in the Daily Mirror reports that as well as Kroos and Strootman, Van Gaal wants United to acquire Marco Reus and Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund.

If United could somehow buy those four players, the squad would be in excellent shape to mount a serious title challenge next season.

Ryan Giggs Keen on the Job

Rob Dawson, writing in the Manchester Evening News says that Ryan Giggs is understood to be "keen to succeed David Moyes."

Speaking on BBC One's Match of the Day on 26 April 2014, former Liverpool defender Alan Hansen said there would be a "tidal wave of support" for Giggs' appointment.

It will intriguing to see how this plays out.

Reus "Remains Coy over New Contract"

David Wright of the Daily Express reports that apparent United transfer target Marco Reus "remains coy" over discussion of his new contract.

Before United fans roll out the red carpet, it is probably worth adding that Reus also said "I do have the time to emphasise how good I feel at Dortmund."

Cavani "Favours" United

According to the Metro Paris Saint Germain's Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani "favours" a move to United, ahead of Chelsea or Manchester City

Whilst Cavani is, of course, a fine player, he would be an expensive acquisition in an area of the pitch where United have excellent resources.

Van Gaal Wants Muller

As the arrival of Louis van Gaal grows apparently ever closer, per the Daily Mail, the same newspaper reports his intentions to sign Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller for Manchester United.

As the summer transfer window approaches, the rumours seem ever more outlandish, but apparently Muller would be prepared to move in order to work with van Gaal again.

City and United Battle over Fabregas

Manchester United face competition from Manchester City for the signature of Cesc Fabregas, according to Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News

On the other hand, presumably, there is also some fairly significant competition from "not going anywhere and staying at Barcelona."

Giggs Out?

Simon Mullock reports in the Mirror that Ryan Giggs is planning to leave Manchester United, and has told officials that he is unwilling to take a role in Louis van Gaal's back room staff.

If this news turns out to be accurate, it will be a tremendous disappointment for United fans, as Giggs will bring his quarter of a century long association with the club to a close.

Rio to Arsenal?

Simon Mullock of the Mirror also reports that Rio Ferdinand may be set for a "shock summer switch" to Arsenal

Given Ferdinand's mixed performances this season it seems unlikely a move to a top-level club will be in the offing, but Arsenal would certainly be acquiring an immense amount of experience. For Rio, it would be a chance at a, presumably, final season of Champions League football.

Van Gaal Targets Robben?

In the latest "staggeringly hard to countenance" transfer rumour of the season, Mike McGrath writes in The Sun (subscription required) that Louis van Gaal wants United to target Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben.

Given Robben was booed every time he had the ball in the clash between the two sides at Old Trafford, it is hard to see this being a popular transfer amongst the United faithful.

Aurevoir Wazza?

Rob Shepherd, writing in the Sunday Mail suggests Paris Saint Germain are considering a move for Wayne Rooney

It is suggested United "could ask for around £35 million" for the player.
