Edin Dzeko will become the latest Manchester City player to extend his deal at the Etihad Stadium as the club continue to secure the long-term loyalty of their biggest stars.

That's according to manager Manuel Pellegrini, whom Stuart Brennan of the Manchester Evening News quoted in stating that a contract is imminent for the Bosnia and Herzegovina international:

Dzeko played a key role in the Citizens' 2-0 dismantling of Newcastle United on Sunday as the reigning Premier League champions got their title defence started with a bang at St. James' Park.

The striker's key contribution came in setting up teammate David Silva for his side's opener, a sumptuous assist shown in all its glory by BH Dragons:

Dzeko will become the latest player at the Etihad Stadium to prolong his Manchester City ties, following Silva, Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany, all of whom signed five-year extensions last week, per

While highlighting those players he wants to keep around, however, Pellegrini also gave some indication of who can leave the club in the remaining fortnight of the transfer window. Matija Nastasic, Micah Richards and Scott Sinclair are all likely to exit:

It's a heartening statement of belief in Dzeko's ability considering his worth to the squad has been put through its paces in recent years.

The arrivals of Aguero and Alvaro Negredo will undoubtedly have tested the former Wolfsburg hitman's value in such esteemed company. However, he was a key figure in the 2013-14 title triumph, scoring 16 goals and making eight assists in 31 league appearances, per Transfermarkt.

One could certainly argue that no player has been tested in terms of competition for playing time on the level that Dzeko has, and his reward for that perseverance could come in the shape of career comfort until the summer of 2019.
