Should Gina Carano and Other Women MMA Fighters Be Allowed to Take on the Men?

Jason FouchaMay 26, 2008

I still don't know how I completely feel on this one, maybe its because I haven't really had the time lately to sit down and watch a fight.

Earlier this year when American Gladiators made its debut, I became infatuated with this hot chick that was called Crush.  It turns out that she's a female MMA fighter named Gina Carano.

Now the issue I want to cover is whether or not I think they should fight, because I'm all for letting women be just as equal as men.  I don't want to be viewed as chauvinistic.  What I want to talk about is the possibility of women going against the men.

Now, when MMA first started people said it was too brutal, too violent, and unethical.  I didn't necessarily agree with them, but I will say today's product is a lot more marketable and a better sport.

However, if women were to go against men, I think it will be viewed more as the violent sport is used to be seen as.  It just doesn't make sense.  With violence towards women such a touchy topic, the last thing I think MMA needs is women fighting men.

With MMA still not allowed in all 50 states, I think this would shine too negative a light on MMA and hurt the growing process of the sport.

With MMA still not widely accepted, I think its too soon for this to even be a possibility.  I believe women can fight.  My mother is a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.  Not the family friendly Tae Kwon Do we have now, but she earned this when Sensei's used physical discipline to teach a lesson, the real version of Tae Kwon Do.

So, I have no problem with women fighting, they can do it all they want. Will it be as popular as men's?  That's a different topic for a different day, I just think that its not the right time for this to happen.

Who am I to say that Carano and other females couldn't take on guys like Georges St Pierre or Anderson Silva.  Who knows, women have a higher thresh hold for pain so hey, they might be better.

But as for now, I just don't think its the right time or place.
