After watching The AMP 50 (not a misprint) at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, Nascar has TOTALLY lost control of the Sprint Cup Series.
I have been to over 20 races at the 2.66 mile track in Talladega, AL and have NEVER witnessed anything as bad as the race just held.
If Jimmy Johnson doesn't have a problem with bump drafting in the corners, why did NASCAR have to ruin one of the most exciting events on the Sprint Cup Series?
As you already know, the drivers were outraged over the rules put in place less than two hours before the start of the race.
If the drivers were shocked, what about ALL the fan's that attended the race and had to watch a single file parade of COT car's for 450 miles.
The International Race of Champions (IROC) started in the early 70's and struggled mightily to make the races entertaining. The idea was great. Put 15 drivers from all types of motor-sports in identical cars and see who the best driver was.
Well, we all know that the I.R.O.C. series went belly up and with the way things are going with Nascar and the Car Of Today, is Nascar looking at the same result!
BACK IN THE DAY, Nascar would make rules up in the middle of the schedule if one make of car had an advantage over another make.
Big Bill France had all kinds of problems in the 1960's with Chevrolet, Ford and Chrysler and when a manufacturer didn't like the rules, they pulled out and cut off all factory support to the teams racing their cars.
Know wonder Lee Roy Yarbrough decked Big Bill at Talladega in 1969. The car owners and drivers never knew what was going to happen next.
I applaud Nascar for coming up with a SAFE CAR, but they have gone way too far by having ALL of the cars looking like one another.
And then there is the WING. The reason the COT cars are going airborne is because of the WING. It actually lifts the rear end on the car and makes all of the roof flaps, etc. totally useless. Bring the SPOLIER back!
And what about the SHOCKS! Why does Nascar have to police the shock absorbers? Not only do they hand them out at each race, they REGULATE the air pressure in them!
I have racing in my blood and it will never go away. I've followed EVERY form of Motor-Sports for almost 50 years and I look at the open wheel cars of today (IRL) and wonder how long it will be before Nascar has 30 car starting fields with EMPTY stands!
