College Football

Considering the combined records of opponents is one way to analyze the BCS rankings.

I have re-ranked here the BCS Top 10 based on the winning percentages of their I-A opponents (South Florida and Boston College have wins over I-AA teams), and noted how they've fared versus ranked teams.

Here are the new rankings:

1. Kentucky (6-1): 30-17, .638, 2-1 vs. ranked teams.

2. LSU (6-1): 29-18, .617, 3-1 vs. ranked teams.

T3. South Carolina (6-1): 27-21, .563, 2-1 vs. ranked teams.

T3. South Florida (6-0): 18-14, .563, 2-0 vs. ranked teams.

5. Oregon (5-1): 21-17, .552, 0-1 vs. ranked teams.

6. Oklahoma (6-1): 23-22, .511, 2-0 vs. ranked teams.

7. WVU (5-1): 18-21, .461, 0-1 vs. ranked teams.

8. Ohio State (7-0): 18-25, .419, 1-0 vs. ranked teams.

9. Arizona State (7-0): 19-27, .413, has played no ranked teams.

10. Boston College (7-0): 15-23, .395, 1-0 vs. ranked teams.

Not only is the competition keener in the SEC—the SEC teams’ out-of-conference schedules are tougher as well.

Ohio State, Boston College, and especially Arizona State have played no opponents of note to date.

A final note: WVU has the misfortune of having 0-6 Marshall on the schedule. Thanks, Gov. Joe Manchin!

  1. Are you kidding me? The SEC's OOC is the worst in CF! Out of 34 OOC games, 25 were against bottom feeders including, 7 against 1-AA teams, 7 against the Sun-Belt, 6 against the CUSA, 1 against WKU, 2 each against the MAC and the WAC. That leaves 9 games, 4 of which they lost to quality opponets and the other five were KSU, Ok St, Lousiville, N.Mex St & UNC.

    Best OOC indeed!

  2. Interesting. This further proves why South Florida should be ranked ahead of Ohio State. We should be finding out a lot about Arizona State as they have yet to play Cal, Oregon, or USC.

Meanwhile, whoever wins the BC v. VaTech game on October 25th has a chance to run the table in a weak ACC.

  3. great stats. i love the comparison of the conferences.

i went through the entire Big Ten OOC schedule. They have not played a team that is currently ranked right now.

However, they have played Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Akron, Ball State, Syracuse all twice. Northen Illinois and Eastern Illinois make an appearance. As well as FAU and FIU.

Duke, Buffalo, Northeastern and Youngstown State show up.

Notre Dame is played 4 times.

The best OOC teams scheduled are either Washinton, Washington State, or UNLV.

And Michigan played a little team from Boone, NC called Appalachian State. I don't know if you heard.

    Keep repping the Southeast!

  4. i was wrong on the ranked oppenents. they have played two; oregon and missouri. i glossed over them too quickly. i guess i was blinded by the ball states, northeasterns, and dukes.

    my bad.

  5. I'm glad to see someone else took the ball and ran with this. It most certainly creates a jaw dropping eye opening experience for viewing the teams in the proper perspective.

  6. Here's a great article on the current and past state of the polling process!

they have played only 2 teams that even have a winning record. one of those teams was NORTHWESTERN.......who lost a game this year to 1-6 DUKE.

  9. ha usf lost to rutgers
