ARMY Deserts DEI

Patrick HaheContributor IJune 22, 2008

With rumors of the ARMY's departure from Dale Earnhardt Incorporated gaining steam (see recent posting on Jayski.com), is it possible that the house Dale Sr. built might be in trouble?

Already, DEI is suffering sponsorship woes. The #01 car continues to race with little sponsorship backing. They lost Budweiser last year, and the rumored addition of Coors Light was taken out of consideration when they became the "Official Beer of NASCAR."

DEI stands alone as the only four-car team to not have at least one driver in the chase.  Martin Truex, JR in the #1 car is the highest, in 15th position about 100 points out of 12th place.

Mark Marin in the #8 and Paul Menard in the #15 sit in 24th and 25th points positions. Meanwhile, Regan Smith in the #01 sits in 30th place.

Adding to DEI's woes is the possibility of Truex following his predecessor, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and leave DEI.  His contract is up at the end of the season and his options are endless. This would force DEI to move Aric Almirola to a full-time position, alongside current rookie Regan Smith and part-timer Mark Martin.

Readers, I ask you to comment on this.  Is DEI in trouble?  What does their future look like?
