Phoning Baron Davis: Please Don't Leave Golden State

Golden State Warriors, Baron Davis , Editorial

If you are a Warriors fan today was a sad day, Baron Davis opted out of his almost $18 million dollar contract to venture out into the free agency market. There have been two reports of places where he would like to go, the Clippers or the Knicks. However, he still says he is leaning towards Golden State.

He wants a long term deal, which the Warriors would be dumb not to at least give him. He also wants some insurance that he will at least have a contending team around him.

With Brand possibly leaving the Clippers because he also opted out of his contract, the Warriors look like a more viable choice for Baron. The Knicks could be an interesting choice with a free flowing coach like Don Nelson in Mike D'Antoni, and the possibility of LeBron James coming. But none of this is concrete of course.

My hope is that Baron is being smart about this, and is willing to take less money, but for a long term deal. He knows that the Warriors have seven free agents and that they need the depth and athleticism of rising star Monta Ellis and solid bench reserve Mikael Pietrus.

If he takes less money, and is locked up for five more years, the Warriors would have a good solid core for at least that long with him and Captain Jack leading the way.

If Baron Davis does not resign, the Warriors will have lost a big dimension to their offense and defense. He is a tenacious, fiery leader who brings leadership and toughness. Every part is key to the Warriors’ success.

If Baron leaves, it could be another subpar stretch of years in the Bay City, and it could be the loss of an exciting form of basketball that we might not see for years.

  1. Jon, Elton Brand opted out to ALLOW the Clippers to sign Baron, then resign himself with the Clips. Baron's as good as gone!!

  2. Jonathan--

Brand opted out to ALLOW the Clippers to sign Davis. Then Elton will resign with the team. Baron is as good as gone.

  3. The Clippers just stole the 8th spot in the playoffs from Golden State. Rumor has it they want to throw their MLE cash towards James Posey once Davis and Brand are officially on. Should make for an interesting team.
