According to an Associated Press report, the eight-legged football oracle known as Paul has predicted that Spain will defeat Netherlands in Sunday's World Cup final in Johannesburg, and that Germany will prevail over Uruguay in the third place match.
The 2 year old octopus has so far proved right in its predictions for Germany and thus made a 100% accuracy rate till now.
And it took only three minutes the celebrity Octopus to decide the final's fate in favor of Spain.
Tanja Munzig, the spokeswoman for sea life in Oberhausen, said" That was fast, it looks like a clear cut victory for Spain".
It was surprising to see the fast decision time of Paul, as it took him some 70 minutes to decide the results in a previous match.
The octopus, considered by some to be the most intelligent of all invertebrates, got the choice of picking his food from two different transparent containers lowered into his tank — one with Holland's flag on it and one with Spain's flag. That was the process and you know the result.
The country was shocked and distraught when he picked Spain to beat Germany after tipping German wins over Argentina and England. Shocks resounded when Paul picked Serbia over Germany, and people thought it is crazy, but the prediction came true.
Paul's selections have become top news across Germany and around the world. Some linked Paul with a superstitious power that influences its predictions. Some doubted the predictions.
But after Paul accurately picked Spain to beat Germany in the semi-final, doubts were cleared. Some Germans called for a public roasting of the octopus. Newspapers and websites were filled with suggestions on how to cook and eat him and thus put an end to its life and predictions.
Officials at Sea Life in Oberhausen have now installed extra security to protect their octopus. Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was quoted in Spanish media reports saying that he is worried about Paul's protection and intends to send a protective team to safeguard Paul.
It will be this Sunday that we will learn the truth. Whether it will be a Super Oranje that lifts the trophy beating Spain and disproving Paul, or the victorious end to a dream run for Spain.
Neither have won the World Cup before, so either way victory will mean history is made!
