The Under-hyped MLB Trade Deadline

Ken Griffey Junior, Manny Ramirez, and Pudge Rodriguez. Quite a powerhouse crew being pushed before the trade deadline this year.

“The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy,” Ramirez added. “I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don’t deserve me. I’m not talking about money. Mental peace has no price, and I don’t have peace here.”

Well, the Boston Red Sox may or may not deserve Manny, but apparently the Dodgers do. A three way trade involving the Red Sox, Pirates, and Dodgers sends Manny to LA and Jason Bay to Boston. Trade rumors to ship Manny Ramirez out of Boston have followed him for years, and this season was no different. Unlike the past, the Red Sox actually decided to make a move and let Manny be Manny somewhere else. From the outside looking in, Manny Ramirez seems like a lovable class clown. The Red Sox organization is much smarter than us though, so I am sure he was actually doing more harm than good.

What is the fantasy impact of this trade?

Manny is moving from Fenway Park, with its short left field porch, to the Big Papi-less Dodger stadium, the worst home run park in 2008. Jason Bay owners should be happy, since his move is equivalent to going from Everybody Loves Raymond to Seinfeld. Griffey is still a non-factor in fantasy, but he has hit 600 homers so we have to at least give him props. Unfortunately he doesn’t really have a spot with the White Sox.

In short, Manny’s value decreases and Jason Bay’s value increases.
