NHL Buzz: Ilya Kovalchuk Gives the NHL a Deadline

Todd CordellCorrespondent IAugust 27, 2010

Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Ilya Kovalchuk and his agent(s) have given the NHL a deadline to approve one of the many contracts the Devils and Kovalchuk have agreed upon. If the NHL does not approve any of them by today or tomorrow, it is very possible Kovalchuk will end up in the KHL.

I was exchanging texts and direct messages with Chesnokov almost all day yesterday and when I asked him where he thinks Kovalchuk will end up (after his last Kovalchuk article), he replied "The Devils."

I personally still think he will sign in New Jersey, but we will have to wait and see.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have decided to let Bill Guerin go. It is expected that several teams are interested. I have heard whispers that a return to Long Island is not out of the question.

Andy Strickland is reporting that the Anaheim Ducks equipment staff has contacted the Blues asking them about Paul Kariya.

I truly believe he will be a Duck, it is just a matter of time.

The Thrashers continue to talk with Lee Stempniak. If he wants to sign there, he will have to sign at a reasonable price.

The Maple Leafs continue to search for some help up front. They would not shy away from moving a defenseman if the right deal came along.

It is also worth noting that Ron Wilson will meet with Tomas Kaberle in the near future.

This concludes today's edition of NHL Buzz, enjoy.
