NHL Buzz: Are the New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs Talking Trade?

Todd CordellCorrespondent ISeptember 8, 2010

Various media outlets are reporting that the Maple Leafs and Devils may be talking. Darren Dreger of TSN reported a few days ago that the Leafs may be willing to take on some salary if the Devils included draft picks in a trade. Meanwhile other media outlets are saying that the Devils and Maple Leafs are working on a "hockey trade."

My take: I don't know if anything will come of this but if I were to guess who the Leafs would actually take, I would guess Dainius Zubrus (No chance the Leafs are getting Zach Parise or Travis Zajac, so please don't bring it up).

The Nashville Predators have re-signed defenseman Cody Franson to a two-year deal that will earn him a total of 1.6 million dollars.

My take: Nice job by the Predators management locking up another young defenseman for a while. I expect Franson to play a bigger role with the Predators this season.

Mike Heika of Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Stars are still in talks with James Neal and Matt Niskanen. He also notes that the Stars think they can get them both locked up by the start of training camp.

My take: There was never any doubt in my mind that these two players wouldn't be re-signed by the Stars. They are both solid young players and will play a big role for the Stars for a long period of time.

The Detroit Red Wings have placed Derek Meech on waivers.

My take: I would be shocked if he isn't claimed. He is a young defenseman who has a ton of potential, he also is on a one-year deal that will earn him a total of $500,000 which makes him even more appealing to teams.

I have talked to a few Rangers sources over the past few days. They have told me that the Rangers and Marc Staal are progressing in contract talks but still have some work left to do. It sounds like Staal wants four to $5 million per season while the Rangers are believed to be offering $3.75 million.

My take: I think something will get done eventually. On a side note, four million is a bit high in my opinion. I personally think Staal should just take the 3.75 million dollars on a short-term contract and get ready for the regular season.

Various media outlets are reporting that Bobby Ryan and the Ducks are extremely close to a contract extension. Some outlets are saying it will be a three-year contract while others are saying it will be a five-year contract.

My take: I think it will be a shorter term contract unless the Ducks pay him more money to stay long-term. I still think he re-signs with the Ducks regardless.
