We have successfully completed the first seven editions of "Who Is The Best Of The Premier League?" Here, we shift our focus to the centre backs.

The previous editions were based on Central Midfielders, Strikers, Defensive Midfielders, Left Wingers, Right Wingers , Right Backs and  Left Backs.

Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres (Didier Drogba being the other striker), Micheal Essien, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bakary Sagna and Patrice Evra have been our selected winners so far.

I'm picking some contenders, then the readers will hopefully pick the best out of them and in the process we will create another healthy debate, so here goes...

  • B/R Ticket Guide

Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United-England)

Ferdinand is top-class defender, he's broken into the England ranks and is now a prime candidate for full-time England Captain. His partnership with Vidic has been influential for United.

Is he the Best?

Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United-Serbia)

Vidic is a top performer. He is the only centre back who has come close to what Steve Bruce did for the Red Devils. Vidic is the real rock at United's defense.

Is he the Best?

John Terry(Chelsea-England)

Terry is currently England's captain and Chelsea's skipper. He is a team man with a determination to match, he is widely regarded as one of the best defenders of his era.

Is he the Best?

Ricardo Carvalho (Chelsea-Portugal)

Carvalho is another gem of a defender, he has managed to match his performances for Porto with those for the Blues. He is arguably one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Is he the Best?

Kolo Toure (Arsenal-Ivory Coast)

Toure is the heart of Arsenal's defense. He is a very determined lad, who comes across as a bit of a "leader" even when he's not the captain. He is improved the timing of his tackles significantly over time.

Is he the Best?

Jaime Carragher (Liverpool-England)

If Liverpool's midfield is all about Gerrard then their defense is all about Carragher, over time he has become one of best defenders in England's Top Flight.

Is he the Best?

Due to the lack of time and space, I can't go on and on with Ledley King, William Gallas or Sol Campbell, so vote for whoever you think is worthy.

You must vote for two defenders because we are going to create the B/R EPL XI.

Vote for any TWO Defenders, who you think are the Best in the Premier League and they don't have to be from this list.

  1. Riccy C, our best defender for the past two seasons.

Second defender: Rio Ferdinand. Don't like him as a person but as a defender he's top quality.

  2. Nemanja Vidic without a doubt.

Terry is overrated in my opinion, a good defender, but not as good as he is made out to be. Rio can lose concentration easily.

    Close second is Carvalho.

  3. Il give it too Nemanja Vidic and Steven Taylor, the latter has twice as much class as Rio and sadly if he was at United would be one of the best in the world...

  4. Vidic and Carvalho for me too..

  5. Vidic and Rio anyday.
Work like charm when in the middle together!

  6. carvalho definitely. he's a complete defender.

the fact that there are six nominees for center backs while there were less in other positions just shows the defensive approach in england. catanaccio stopped in italy, and it was launched in england. because of the power of english defensive players, capello should implement defensive tactics with england.

  7. I like Vidic. He's really agressive.

  8. For me, it is Rio and Vidic, and not just because they play for United. They are the best CB's in the league right now.

  9. I think a centre half is nothing without his partner at the back and so I'm a massive believer in centre half partnerships... without a doubt the best partnership is rio and vidic... they compliment each other with there different styles but are both quality defenders! but as an out an out "defender" you cant look past nemanja vidic, its as if his sole purpose on earth was to do everything he can to prevent goals without contemplating is own welfare!

  10. Terry, and Toure for me, usually have more work to do than the others mentioned. Ledley King is good too, but he needs to stop injuring that knee.

  11. A central defensive partnership is something which is very important and so I will go for Ferdinand and Vidic, purely because I haven't seen them play with JT, Toure or Carvalho. They're a solid pair and are very good at the back.

  12. Carra and terry for me

  13. Rio is number one for me – best defender in European football at the moment and probably for the past two years. His alledged “loss of concentration” is a myth spread by journalists too lazy to notice that this hasn’t been a part of his game for about 3 or 4 years.

Second would be Carvalho, I don’t think Chelsea lost (in the league) when he played last season and that shows how much they miss him when he’s not there.

  14. john terry is no matched for other EPL centre backs he's the man. as his partner i will choose ledley king i know he's an injury prone but when he plays he's a solid rock at the back lines

  15. Ferdinand and Vidic

  16. 1. Nemanja VIdic
    2. John Terry
    3. Rio Ferdinand

  17. Vidic is by far the best.

  18. Carvalho and Vidic would be the best partnership. Carvalho is a similar player to Ferdinand, but better, and Vidic is a similar player to Terry, but better.

Toure should be playing in central midfield in my opinion, he is a very good centre half, but he has the ability to be Arsenal's Essien if they played him in the holding role.

Carra has been a great player for Liverpool, but does not have the class of Rio or Carvalho, nor the threat in the opposition box of Terry or Vidic. He does have a great knack of always being in the right place though, he is like a magnet for the ball.

Ledley King is as good as Rio in my opinion, but sadly he is never fit for more than 5 minutes at a time.

  19. vidic and ferdinand make the list.

    by kapi, in Uganda

  20. vidic and terry for me

  21. Carvalho and Vidic for me.

Shalar, what do you think about Skertel?

I think he is an emergent player and could be in this list soon.

    1. could be needs more exposure.

  22. Vidic

  23. Vidic and Rio are the best central defenders in the Premier League by some distance and as a pair they are miles ahead of everyone else.

  24. Carvahlo is the individual best, but Rio and Vidic are the best in tandem. So my vote goes to Ricardo Carvahlo. He makes John Terry look better than he is.

  25. If i would go with a biased vote I would say Toure, but i think Vidic is probably the best.

  26. If defending was glamorous people would be calling rio and vidic the best players in the world not ronaldo!

    1. never has a truer word been spoken!

  27. ferdinand and of course jamie carragher!

we all dream of a team of carraghers!

  28. Carvalho is bloody quality. Vidic is good in the air and aggressive. A Ferdinand sort of player is a neccesity to any defense. hmmm... I say Carvalho and Ferdinand.

  29. Nema Vidic is the best without a doubt.

  30. I think Ferdinand is the best in the world atm..the compusure he has on the ball is amazing and his distribution is second to none. Also add to that his leadership qualities..and we have the finest defender in the premier league....

I would rate Carvalho as the second best defender in the league...his positioning sense is world class...but i think Carvalho and Ferdinand are too alike...therefore as a partnership I would go for Rio and Vida.....

  31. nemanja vidic is the best defender in the premiership by far, you can't get past him. when they say he's a rock it's an understatement. he's brave, strong, tough and has all the qualities you need to be a top class defender.

rio is a close second, he was the most consistent defender all season last season and prevented goals single-handedly, he was there when united needed him the most. such as roma away when vida had to go off injured. he can step up and i admire that about him. he's grown up a whole lot in the past two seasons or so and he led united to the double last season as stand in captain for gary neville and ryan giggs.

rio and vida together are an unmistakable, undeniable partnership. the best in europe. all you have to look at is united's defensive record last season to see how good the two really are.

  32. Rio is overrated so too is Terry, I would pick Vidic and Carvahlo those two are the best, with carragher coming in a close third.
