The Olympics have been filled with great stories and medals awarded to numerous countries from the powerhouses of United States and China to much smaller nations such as Tajikstan and Lithuania. However, over halfway through the games, Canada has still yet to a win a medal. Canada, one of the world’s wealthiest countries that ranks 12th in GDP and GDP per capita is ranked behind Togo in the medal count. Even Georgia who just got conquered by Russia has three medal.
- B/R Ticket Guide
Australia, a country with a similar population, size, and economic developmet, has twenty medals and Cuba, one of the poorest countries in the world has eight medals. This is an embarrassment to Canada. It must be that time spent in line for universal healthcare that prevented their athletes from training. Or maybe it was going through all of the Canadian bureaucracy to get airline tickets and uniforms. They won fourteen medals in 2004, and twelve in 2000, so what has happened. At this rate, they will the most prominent country to get shut out from a medal in Olympic history. At least Canadians get to look forward to hockey in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Second week country at the summer games... always have been. This year was particularly slow in the first week I will concede, but Canada always does well in the second week.

As of Aug 22, we (Canada) have 17 medals with more to come over the final weekend.
To quote you - we won "fourteen medals in 2004, and twelve in 2000, so what has happened.??"
What happened?? Well... I would say we got significantly better after an admittedly slow start.
Having said that, it's important to note that there is very little funding for Canadian atheltes, they are not financially rewarded for medals and our athletes fund their own training.
17 medals so far?? A good haul for a band of self-funded dedicated athletes who pay their own way and play for the pure sport of it.
Now - can you leave our care system alone now? (Waiting in line? Get serious.)
Your jealousy is showing.
My daughter cut her chin skating last year. From the time the school phoned us to the time we left the hospital, stitched up was less that 45 mins.
I broke my arm last year. In less than 90 minutes, I had it looked at, x-rayed, a cast applied, and I was home with my feet up and a beer in hand.
total cost? $0

America, Jr., will for the forseeable future, continue to have the embarassment of being the only host country to not win Olympic gold (Montreal '76). Let them live with that.
