MMA, Anderson Silva, Chuck Liddell, Editorial

Typically the UFC likes to have the NYE show the biggest of the year. As of now we have the title fight of Big Nog vs. Frank Mir. And although GSP is saying it's not likely, the UFC would like to have him face BJ Penn on that card as well. However, it seems like if that fight won't happen they may be trying to get Chuck Liddell and Anderson Silva to square off.

Both fighters have already said the short notice is fine with them.  Chuck fights in September and Silva in October. This could have the makings of a fight of the year. Does Anderson stand with Chuck and risk the overhand right? Or can the takedown defense of Chuck be effective against Silva?

As good as a standup game as Silva has I'm not so sure that this would be the fight to use it. Sure, Liddell got knocked out by Rampage, couldn't drop Jardine, and slugged it out with the axe murderer, but he still possesses one of the most feared and brutal right hands in the game.

As good as Silva is in the clinch and with his pinpoint punching, a stand up fight would have to be in Liddell's favor. He is probably one of the best counter punchers there is and he loves to throw while he is backing up. No doubt Anderson would attack and could walk into an early nap.

On the other hand, Liddell has looked like a slower and more beatable version of what he used to be while Silva appears to be at the very top of his game. Not to mention that Silva is considered by most to be either No. 1 or No. 2 pound for pound fighter in the world. So, he is no slouch and has showed that the increase in weight has no factor in his fighting.

I'm not sure who I'd have my money on in this one, but if it does happen, I know I'll be glued to my screen for every second of it. It just may be one of those historic fights that you don't want to miss.

  1. If this fight ever happens, I think it's a good time for Chuck to polis up on those wrestling skills we keep hearing about. Silva will probably be the most illusive fighter Chuck will ever face. I can't pick a winner in this one. I can see it being boring, though (sorry, folks). I picture both fighters waiting for the other to get off, all the while circling the octagon while the crowd boos. Other than the names, it's not a very exciting match-up for me. I would rather see Silva fight a wrestler (maybe Liddell if he remembers how to wrestle).

    1. I think you have summed it up just right.

  2. I think you guys are over analyzing. Chuck will likely come out with his hands low and Silva should find his button in the 1st. Chuck doesnt match up well against powerful technical strikers.

  3. Chuck I think would get pounded by a much more rounded fighter like Silva.

  4. I don't thinkSilva is too worried about Chuck's over hand right. If anything Chuck is thinking about how Dana can only protect his "legend" for so long and that all hero's eventually fade away.

    1. The days of Dana protecting him are probably over now that fans have become more educated and knowledgeale.

    2. "The days of Dana protecting him are probably over now that fans have become more educated and knowledgeale."

      Ding Ding Ding!

  5. This fight won't happen. Silva has to defend his Middle weight title. He hasn't had a middle weight fight since March, and by the time December rolls around, there will certainly be somebody up for a title shot in that weight class. The fight that needs to be pushed for at the NYE show (along with GSP vs. BJ Penn) should be Anderson vs. Wanderlei

    1. Anderson vs Wanderlei! WOW! And at 185. That would be a Merry Christmas for sure.

  6. Is 2 months enough to get ready? If not Danny is right

  7. anderson is adamit that he wants to fight every 2-3 months...which is why he is taking LHW fights

  8. This fight only happens if Chuck loses to Rashad. If Chuck beats Rashad, there is no way his next fight isn't for a title. Wishful thinking but not going to happen. For the record if it did, Anderson wins easy.

  9. "As good as Silva is in the clinch and with his pinpoint punching, a stand up fight would have to be in Liddell's favor."

No... I disagree with your analysis of this fight. Anderson has better technical stand up and a fight on the feet favors Anderson if anybody, although I do admit Chuck has KO potential (which Anderson would not be afraid of at all because he's so elusive and has a good chin). And even considering the idea that Anderson would try to take Chuck down is a bit silly, and the idea that he could successfully take Liddell down is even sillier.

I think this would be a great fight and I'd have to pick Mr. Anderson. Silva vs Silva is probably an even better match up though if that ever happens.

    1. O. And there is a good chance that Chuck would go for take downs in this fight like he did vs Wandy. He could probably get a few but the chances he would do much with them isn't likely.

  10. I think it may depend on Chucky beating Rashad. I hope he does. Whether, Chuck wins or not. It still would be a great fight.

  11. October 25, 2008
    Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Côté

According to Wikipedia, UFC 90 on the 25th of October will take place in Rosemont, Illinois featuring this fight.

The fight would have to wait till after New Years, unless Silva is badass enough to have less than a month off for another title fight.

    I don't think it will happen :/

    1. Everyone here already knows about the Cote fight...? And how is from 10/25 to 12/27 less than a month? And he is bad ass enough. Not to mention, chances are that the Cote fight won't last long and that he won't take much damage (like all of his fights lately).

    2. My bad. I didnt know it was only three days before the month.

    3. Three days before the months end*

  12. This would definitely be an interesting fight. The problem with Chuck these days is that you never know who is going to show up. The Chuck who couldn't land the big one on Jardine, the Chuck who got the big one landed on him by Jackson, or the Chuck who engages in an all out war (and my pick for 2007 Fight of the Year) with Wanderlei.

Looking at the damage that Jardine inflicted with kicks, it's scary to think what someone with Anderson's skillset could do. I love Chuck's style. He's a warrior, a class act, and the face of MMA. And I don't root against him. However, I think Anderson could be the guy that picks him apart in the ring.

Having said all of that, I think Rashad will give Chuck a good fight next month. So, we might want to save the Anderson vs. Chuck talk for September 7th.

  13. Rashad doesnt give anyone a good fight. He runs around, dances, and then runs somemore. The fact that he is still unbeaten (Tito should have won) is ridiculous and shows that he hasn't fought tough competition. Were it not for the Big John/UFC issues with Tito, that BS penalty point would not have come across, I have heard refs give alot more than 2 warnings about fence grabbing. But Dana is always in control and laid down his wrath. But he will go all 3 rounds with Chuck unless Liddell can find a way to engage him in a battle.

    1. It wasn't your typical fence grabbing. It was a fence grab that specifically prevented him from getting taken down (which would have probably lead to Rashad winning the round). Being that he had already been warned, taking a point was COMPLETELY justified. Otherwise you're screwing Rashad.

    2. Tito won that fight, period. He won two rounds. If that fight goes to anyone, it goes to Tito. No way Rashad deserves credit for anything in that fight. He is the most boring undefeated fighter ever, maybe even moreso than Machida.

    3. I have to disagree with you Bryan. I'd say that fight was a correctly judged draw. That's my opinion anyways. And I have to agree with you that Rashad is not a very exciting fighter. I hope he's Chuck's next KO victim so that we can really get something out of this fight.

  14. I wonder wat will happen if rashad fights machida? hehehe, i think they ought to have samurais just to hit each other ^^

  15. Even though I like Chuck, he just doesn't match up well versus a sound and skilled fighter like Silva
