Vikings: Why Minnesota Is Going To Make a Playoff Run

Ryan NelsonAug 19, 2008

The Vikings are possibly the team of 2008. They've got it all. A monster O-line, two great running backs, a good quarterback, a deep treat receiver, and a killer defense. I'm going to break down these points and show you why the Minnesota Vikings are really, really good.

Quarterback- Tarvaris Jackson, he's got great accuracy, a tight spiral, and effective speed. He's injury prone, but with protection, it's a minor problem. I'm convinced by his play. I know it's only the preseason, but he's shown that he is a weapon in the open field, and that when healthy, he is really good. The injuries are a problem though. He is amazing when healthy, and Childress and the O-Line should protect him at all costs.

Offensive Line- They are a bunch of mammoths that can hit. Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor should have no problem with defenses this year with the pressure from the passing game. Defenses will have their hands full with all sides of this offense, and when Peterson is lining up, be ready for anything from this group of guys. Matt Birk, Steve Hutchinson, and Bryant McKinnie are anchored for the group, and the right side is alright too. My biggest concern, however, is Bryant McKinnie. His off season behavior was unacceptable, and should be punished by the league, and that leaves a huge hole in the left side.

Running Backs- Fear not, "Purple Jesus" is here. No, I'm not talking about a drug. I'm talking about Adrian Peterson. He is the savior of the Minnesota Vikings. He and Chester Taylor's one-two punch is enough to have a defensive coordinator updating his resume. The passing game will be better with Berrian, and that'll take some pressure off of Peterson.

Wide Receiver/Tight End- Berrian, Wade, Rice, and Ferguson are the guys here. The drop machine of Troy Williamson is gone, and possession man Berrian is in. The addition makes these guys a viable threat to defenses. The combinations should play with defensive strategies and open up the running game.

Defense- Jared Allen and Madieu Williams. Wow. This group was great all ready, adding a cover safety and a pass rushing beast is going to put these guys to the extreme. The "Purple People Eaters" are back. Even though Madieu is out for the season, the season will be good, and next year it'll be great. These guys are beasts.
