Chelsea and Real Madrid Fall Out over Robinho Kit Sales

Real Madrid Chairman Roman Calderon believes Robson De Souza has been mislead by his agent over his proposed move to Chelsea.

Calderon believes that Robinho would be far better off at Real and has faith that the Brazilian will make the right decision. For a change, I believe him.

It's been one of the longest transfer sagas of the summer, and with just days to go until the transfer window deadline it appears things remain far from sorted out.

What I can't believe is that Chelsea were actually selling replica kits with Robinho's name on them yesterday.

It shows total disrespect for Madrid, and not only that, but for their own fans. I doubt many have the money to waste on a Chelsea shirt with another team's player on it, should the deal fall through.

Such blatant gamesmanship by Chelsea could be one of the main reasons for any proposed deal to fall through.

I'm not even sure Chelsea need the 42-times-capped Robinho?

They have Joe Cole, Deco, Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, and many more in the midfield and Robinho's hardly an out and out striker.

The youngster, in my opinion, never lived up to his promise in Spain and would struggle in England—at least at first. Don't get me wrong, he is a fantastic player, just not as successful as the world thought he would be.

He still has the potential to be a world beater, but not at Chelsea as far as I'm concerned.

The man who has scored 11 goals for Brazil joined Real Madrid in 2005 from Brazilian giants Santos and I feel if there is any team that can get the best out of him it is Real Madrid.

Joining Chelsea is by no means a step forward in a player's career. Just ask Andrei Shevchenko, Steven Sidwell, or Shaun Wright-Philips if Chelsea was the right move in their careers?

What will Robinho gain from playing for Chelsea? I honestly can't think of anything.

Maybe he thinks he'll be under less pressure? That won't be the case, however.

Given a choice between Chelsea and Real Madrid, I'd choose Madrid every time.

The money can't be that much better, Robson.

Or maybe, just maybe, that's it.

  1. i like the article, good work. although i think robinho will fit well next to deco and behind drogba with a midfield line of essien, ballack and lampard.

as for robinho, well i think chelsea are much better than real. actually i think real arent that good this season. check out my article regarding real on my profile.

    cheers,

    zahi

    1. Thanks Z.

Don't tell me Real aren't that great this season... I just picked them on my coupon :P

So would Robs arrival have a down side for Joe Cole?

  2. yeah i think so.. i think joe cole would have to be "benched"... it's a really strong side. heavy competition for places.

    1. Bit harsh I'd say...cole has been a star performer.

  3. I agree with Andrew on this one, we don't badly need him and even though he has shown flashes of brilliance to the world, he's not the player everyone thought he'd become when he first emerged.

I actually think his arrival will only be bad for the team as a whole. And Zahi above has used that phrase "competition for places" but in this case, I just see it making some of the squad members unhappy.

It will be very interesting to see how this pans out over the next couple of days.

    1. Thanks for he comments mate. It'll def be interesting to see what FINALLY happens haha

  4. Good article Andrew. I think Robinho would be a great signing for Chelsea, and would make them even stronger, but he is definitely an unnecessary signing. In terms of development as a player, he would be better off at Madrid.

    1. Cheers Yoosof. my thoughts exactly.

What about the cheeky shirt sales?

  5. I don't think Real Madrid will let him go.They only reason they've entertained the idea is to not look like the bunch of hypocrites they are after the Ronaldo situation.Calderons started squeaking on about they need to replace him before letting him go.Chelsea don't need him anyway.Robinho's a poor man's SWP!

    1. Even though I wouldn't say a poor mans SWP...he's not needed at Chelsea I agree.

      Chelactico :)

    2. Ha maybe that is going a bit far but i still don't rate him.He was the new pele when Real signed him.Chelsea would have been better not selling Robben to them in the first place he's a much better player.

  6. Good article, completely agree. This is just giving me another reason to despise Chelsea. The few times I've managed to catch a Madrid match on TV over here, Robinho has looked fantastic. There's a reason that los Merengues don't want to give him up.

When I compare EPL clubs to American baseball teams for my non-footballing friends, Chelski always end up getting compared to the New York Yankees because of incidents like this.

    1. Thanks Joe. I'm hoping my new word Chelactico's takes off :)

  7. Good article...I feel over the last few years that Chelsea just sign players without really thinking where they'll fit in. As for the shirt sales I agree Chelsea should no way have done that (remember the Paul Ince saga) but Real Madrid are hardly ones to talk...

    1. Thanks Maire. They seem too, funnily enough just like Madrid. Not sure if Scolari has a clue lol

  8. Haha Chelactico, good one Andrew.

    1. Thanks mate :) should I copyright it :P

  9. First time I am going to comment on a football article ... I am a BIG football fan but dont really tend to get involved in the banted unless at work ... BUT ... I will say something that could get me some hate mail, I HATE CHELSEA ... They are everything that is wrong about football right now ... I hope they dont get their man ! Great writing mate !

    1. Well hello Ben.

I'm glad your first time is over and you don't have to be so scared to comment from now on. I'm still waiting for that article....was it colchester???

    2. Ha ha ... Yeah ... We had a good start, kind of dropped off since then but we did beat West Brom the other night in the Carling Cup .. 3-1 after extra time ... Colchester will be foolish to underestimate us again, ha ha !

    3. haha good form mate. I'll look out for you in the next round.

    4. Good stuff ... Might be as far as we go so you do that ... Ha ha !

    5. Fair enough, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I've become used to us being hated over the last couple of years and I can't say it bothers me too much.

    6. Its all part of it really ... What would the beautiful game be without some rivalry ?

  10. I think the key factor for Robinho is not so much Chelsea but the fact that Scolari would be involved.

I`m quite sure that there have been conversations between the two.

I`m also quite sure that Scolari is not 100% happy with the players he now has at Chelsea - even if he diplomatically states to the press that he is.

He has been desperate for world class players and made several mega offers since he started managing Chelsea including the likes of Ronaldinho, Kaka and Robinho. There is a definite pattern in his signing ambitions and a clear vision of a man who is unhappy with a mechanical flat midfield and looking for flare.

The only one spared of an offer seems to be Messi.

    1. Scolari claims to know little about what is going on. No none really knows what is going on.

I wouldn't say the midfield of cole, deco, ballack and lampard was mechanical. I'd be pretty happy with it personally.

  11. Robinho is only in this for the money. He doesnt care who he plays for.

    1. 99% of the time I`d agree with what you just said.

This case is a little different though. I don`t think he gets enough of the spotlight at Real.

He is seizing an opportunity to get more match time and attention with a coach he knows in charge.

Ultimately to get more exposure and eventual financial gains but his short term goals actually have to do with football and being able to show more of what he`s got.

Dunga called him to Copa America and he delivered.

    2. The reason he has not gotten more of the spotlight at Madrid is because he has not performed. He is hot or cold all the time and plays with no consistency and that is why he lost playing time at the end of last season to Higuain.

The reason they want to hold on to him is because he is a fantastic talent—one of the best in the world. And we have Robben—the glass man—in his position in front of Robinho.

    3. @S: No coach can be as supportive of Robinho as Schuster have been last season. Robinho himself spoke once about he much Schuster's faith in him has helped him regain his confidence and find his form, and he thanked him for all of that today by slamming him in a press conference.

I agree with you he wants more attention, but he thinks that it's the club that's holding him back and still hasn't realized he is the one at fault for never reaching his full potential, and unless he does soon, he will never become the great player he aspires to be.

  12. Surely there must be a rule against that? Even FIFA can't be as useless as to not have a rule that says you cannot sell replica shirts with the name of a player you don't even own.

If it were Man Utd at the recieving end, they would be whining already to the FA, UEFA, FIFA, and the UN. Real Madrid just released a statement saying the are disapointed with Chelsea's behaviour. Goes to show that despite what a lot of people claim, we have class afterall :)
