Lake Charles, LA—McNeese State University Cowgirls capture their first outright regular season Conference Championship in school history over Lamar Lady Cardinals 70-69, earning them them a No. 1 seed in next week's Southland Conference Championship in Katy, Texas. McNeese Cowgirls were not going give up in their house without a fight, when they erased a nine-point deficit with 2:52 left in the game.
“Wow, what an unbelievable win , what an unbelievable crowd. This was a championship atmosphere here today at Burton," said head coach Brooks Donald Williams.
Sophomore guard Caitlyn Baggett led all all scores with 20 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor, 2-for-3 from behind the arch, and 6-of-7 from the foul line, gathering eight rebounds off the boards. She assisted by junior Kendra Wells adding 15 points, 5-of-11 from the paint, and 5-for-5 from the foul line. Rounding out the leading scores is Ashlyn Wells with 11 points, shooting 4-for-14 from the paint, 1-for-5 from the arch and 2-for-2 from the foul line.
The Lady Cowgirls jumped to an early lead with their first five points coming form seniors Kiara Johnson with a pair of fouls shots, Ne’Aisha Anderson with a three-point shot. With 11:07 left in the half Lamar came back to take the lead 12-14. We saw four ties in the half before coming to 35-35 tie at halftime.
The second half resembles much of the first half, with Lamar taking their highest lead of the game 57-66 with 3:22 left in the game off a layup by Kalis Loyd, giving her a game-high 25 points. The game got interesting with the Cowgirls going on a 12-3 run edging by the Lady Cardinals 70 -69, with the game-winning jumper coming for Wells.
