WWE Extreme Rules 2011: The Real Winners of the Night

Craig Holland-GreenfieldContributor IIMay 1, 2011

Extreme Rules is mere hours away and speculation is ever increasing as to who will walk away victorious from each match. Even a few days ago I gave my predictions, which can be found here.

Much talk is about the World Heavyweight Championship and whether or not it will make its way to Raw with the WWE Championship.

But hey, I’m not here to talk about who the winners will be and which title will go where. No, I’m going to tell you the reasons that I believe Jack Swagger and Cody Rhodes will be the real winners of the night, regardless of the outcome of their matches.

Without further ado, here I go.

Jack Swagger

The All-American American will be joining broadcast journalist Sir Michael Cole in a tag team country whipping match against Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler.

For Cole, Ross and Lawler, it is a match with nothing on the line and no consequences for the winners and losers. For Swagger, it is the start of great things to come.

Having been pushed to gold early on, he fizzled out once he lost the belt and was reduced to mid-card hell since.

Lately, however, he has been in the spotlight a lot more. Mainly he has been there as a staunch supporter of Cole, but even bad press is press nonetheless.

With Swagger featuring so little in past pay-per-views, his prominent showing in WrestleMania 27 and now Extreme rules are surely the WWE’s way of pushing him once more. This time, they would do well to give him a slow push rather than throw him in straight away again.

All this time in the spotlight is doing wonders for Swagger and he has shown more of himself lately than he has ever before. He has even won a few squash matches, to prove his dominance.

If they do the smart thing and have Swagger turn on Cole, he will be over with the fans as a face almost immediately and he can soon pull his way to the top and feud with Miz or Del Rio for a title.

I predict a major title for him by 2012, preferably later so as to not burn his push too quick.

Win or lose, he’s had enough exposure to send him on his way.

Cody Rhodes

Having been involved in a high-profile feud with Rey Mysterio since the beginning of the year, it now seems set to end with Mysterio moving to Raw.

With an excellent match behind him at WrestleMania, where he came off victorious, he has since cut some even more excellent promos to further enhance his haunted character.

Although he did lose in a one-on-one match with Mysterio on last week's SmackDown, he did come off the better, having ravaged Mysterio inside and outside the ring, before placing a paper bag on his head. The same on SmackDown just past, once more coming out on top and putting a paper bag on Mysterio.

Still only 25, he has a long career ahead of him in the business and if he continues to show more of the same then he can be a major player by 27. Being so young, it is hard to believe he has already been with the WWE for four years.

Being featured so heavily with one of the company’s top superstars, Mysterio, is doing wonders for Cody and people are starting to take notice of the former Legacy member.

I think he will win his match tonight, and if he does then a belt is the next logical step in his career. If Christian wins the title, like many believe, then Rhodes can easily enter into the title race and feud with Christian for the next few months before finally getting gold.

If he loses, then I still think he can go for gold, but with some more build up. Judging by how much time he has been given already, I firmly believe he will get all the build up necessary to turn him into a World Champion within the next few years.

So that’s it. Win or lose, I think both of these men have bright futures ahead and are ready to hit the main stage and go for gold soon enough.

I hope you enjoyed reading my article and I hope you all enjoy the event tonight.
