As the sun beats down to scorching levels around most of the continent, 30 NHL GMs from Philadelphia to Winnipeg are watching something else heat up quite quickly, too: free agency.

The 2011 NHL free agency period opens Friday, July 1, at noon (E.T.), with hundreds and hundreds of UFAs (Unrestricted Free Agents) hitting the market and looking for new contracts. While a few players may be slightly bigger targets than others this month, there's sure to be a frenzy of activity involving everyone from Anton Babchuk to Zenon Konopka.

Here are Bleacher Report's lists of the best forwards, defensemen and goaltenders available.

While the headlines of new signings will likely be popping up all across the hockey world, often, for us fans, the harder part of following up free agency is simply keeping all the new deals organized. To solve that issue, we'll be keeping track of all of the signings—large or small—in a team-by-team transactions index, so you can see exactly which players are going where and monitor how all of the movement will affect each franchise as a whole.

Our transactions index will feature three categories: "Acquired", out-of-town players signed and/or traded for (previous team in parenthesis); "Lost", players from the previous season signed and/or traded elsewhere (destination team in parenthesis); and "Re-Signed", players from the previous year given new contracts.

The index will be continually updated over the next week and longer, even as the flood of signings slows to a trickle as we inch towards mid-July. It will be functional as a complete and up-to-the-second guide to follow your favorite NHL team's (and the other 29's, as well) trades and signings (not including entry-level contracts) from last weekend's draft all the way through the heat of free agency.

Note: Our 2010 NHL Free Agency Team-by-Team Transactions Index has been archived and can be found here. On a separate note, we will not be including UFA rights and draft picks involved in trades in the acquired/lost categories.
