With every team having played either seven or eight games it’s time to take a look at the halfway point of the season and start giving some hardware out to the deserving players and teams in the NFL. Below are my awards and thoughts about the first half of the 2008 NFL season.
Most Valuable Player: Clinton Portis (Redskins) This is a pretty easy selection. The Redskins are 6-2 when many people expected them to be the last place team in the division. At his current pace, he would finish with 374 carries for 1,888 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Redskins have gotten a lot of help from other places.

Their defense ranks eighth in points allowed and sixth in yards allowed. Jason Campbell has 230 pass attempts without an interception. Santana Moss has 658 yards receiving and five touchdown catches. However, Portis is the straw that stirs the Washington drink. He has been the MVP of the NFL to date on a team that no one expected to compete for the NFC East title.
Offensive Player of the Year: Drew Brees (Saints) Drew Brees would be in the MVP race if his team were doing a little better. The Saints are only 4-4 and currently in last place in the NFC South. While that is not his fault, you rarely see MVPs come from last place clubs. However, in terms of offensive numbers he is on a record pace.
His best stat is his passing yards. He is on pace to break Dan Marino’s record of 5,084 passing yards in a season. At his current pace, Brees would finish with 5,126 yards passing. He also is on pace for 30 touchdown passes, a 100-plus rating, and only 14 interceptions. If his team can make a playoff push in the second half of the season look for him to get more MVP consideration...
