The Los Angeles Kings remained incredibly quiet as the free agency frenzy began today.  Their only real move was making a huge pitch to Brad Richards and his agent.  Rumors are saying that the pitch included a video with messages from Kobe Bryant and Wayne Gretzky.

It's clear that Dean Lombardi has put all of his eggs in this one basket.  Tim Leiweke is on the record saying that the team put more effort into wooing Richards than he has ever seen them do before.  That means that they are trying harder for this player than they did for Kovalchuk one year ago.

If Brad Richards signs with the Kings, it will mark a historic day for the franchise and Dean Lombardi's tenure.  It will mark the first time that Lombardi was able to lure a top-tier free agent to the city of Los Angeles.

Rumors will continue around the Twitter-sphere until Brad Richards signs somewhere in the league.  Until that moment, we all have to wait and see what happens.  His presence in the Kings lineup would instantly put the team into the upper echelon of the Western Conference, if not the entire league.

Let's hope the pitch for Richards worked as many view him as the final piece of the puzzle for a team that is budding with young talent and is in search of that extra offensive punch.  Mike Richards was the start of that revolution and Brad Richards could mark the end.

Enjoy the weekend.
