Pete Carroll's group is still as talented as anybody and I think that their explosive, big play defense puts them above a closely matched lump of one loss teams.
BabyTate #4
Gives up 78 rushing yards a game with a win margin of 31 points a game.
Jonny Solovy #4
I don't think people understand how great this defense is. The stats are unreal and if you watch the, you feel the pain for the other team. Their offense, although a question at times, can move the ball with ease, penalties have hurt them.

Best D in the country. And second place is a long ways behind.

The Trojans will be looking for revenge as they visit the Stanford Cardinal, the team that killed their championship hopes a season ago.
Aaron Barton #5
Justin Thomas #5
I put the Trojans in the #5 spot because of their defense. Their offense may only be scoring a few points but their defense has only allowed 1 TD in the last 4 or 5 games. Very impressive. More so than the Oklahoma team that gets way ahead and lets people score all over em.
Stephen Jeffries #5
Trojans could very well end up in National Championship game.
Scott Pusich #6
(previous: 7) 8-1; beat No. 25 California 17-3 It's not that the Trojans are that bad; it's that the teams ahead of them are that good. Pete Carroll seems to realize that running up the score against the teams from the Evergreen state didn't count for much, and perhaps the team was retooling ahead of the Cal game, getting new "looks" ready for the crunch games ahead. Either that, or Cal's defense is pretty impressive. Heh.

Uninspiring win against Cal. No questioning their talent.

We give teams so much credit for dominant offense... what's wrong with playing dominant D?
Matt Poloni #6
Although I'm not completely sold on this team, the Trojans are convincing with their wins. Until further notice, they deserve to be near the top.

Picking teams apart in the Pac-10. Had a little trouble with their rival Cal though.
Sooner03 #6
Wish the Cal slinger could throw a third down pass. It would have made that game more intesting. Does the USC offense play down to teams sometimes??
Michael Shibley #6
Great team, but the loss to Oregon State may come back to bite them if there are too many one loss teams.
Burgess Shaw #6
Still not impressed with playing in the weak Pac-10 Conference.

If defense wins championship, the Trojans proved that by keeping Cal out of the end zone last weekend. But the Trojans know that it's already over for them. As long as Texas, OU, Florida, Bama and Tech continue winning, the best USC can do is The Rose Bowl against Penn State. Oops! Did I let the cat out of the bag?
Jeff Johnson #7
Yeah, they're good. Yeah, they're 8-1. But they're playing in the second weakest BCS conference. They played no one good in non-conference play. They have no ranked teams left on their schedule. Unless someone above them falls, it will be hard to justify USC in a BCS bowl game at all.

Every year I am dissapointed in the toughness of their schedule and the credit they are given. However this year they are finally living up to their hype.
Brett Kettyle #8
Pete Carrol doesn't understand the BCS, and he probably wouldn't understand why he is eigth in my rankings either. Well heres why, The Pac-10 is weak. As for the BCS, its simple, the computer numbers are weak, and with garbage on the schedule from here on out, they won't be getting any better
Archie Adams #9
Adam Lindemer #9
Still not winning impressively. And for the Trojans, that puts them on the outside looking in.
Jimson Cuenta #9
EVEN IF the Trojans win out, they can still find themselves playing in a NON-BCS Bowl game. That is, IF Oregon State wins out. Seriously!
robert carola #10
Peter R #12
Until they beat a real team losing to an unranked team with another narrow victory against the other unranked Oregon team will haunt them. This year the Rose Bowl is meaningless in the hunt for the top five.

Yeah, and I guess Peter wasn't watching when they destroyed the (then) No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes. Putting them at No. 12 just shows that you're a hater. I think dropping them beyond No. 5 or 6 is questionable, but No. 12 is just laughable.
