The BCS "stinks," said Pete Carroll last week.

Funny, in 2005 I didn't hear him demanding a playoff when an undefeated Auburn team was left out of the NC game, while his Trojans were let in.

He thought the BCS was just fine in 2006 when his undefeated team met an undefeated Texas team in the NC game.

But Pete Carroll doesn't like the BCS anymore.  Last year the Trojans were embarrassed at home when they lost to 41 point underdog Stanford.

  • B/R Ticket Guide

This year they lost on the road to 24 point underdog Oregon State.  It was worse than the previous year's defeat.  At least Stanford needed a miracle last second play to pull off the upset.  The Trojans were completely dominated by the Beavers this year.

USC fans know that the college football regular season is a virtual elimination playoff.  If you lose once, there is an over 90% chance you won't play in the NC game.

Carroll has had an easy time maintaining his one loss record in a pathetic Pac 10 conference, where no team has been ranked in the top 20 since Week Three.

Now that he finds himself on the outside looking in for the second year in a row in a one loss team beauty contest, he's calling press conferences demanding a playoff system be established.

It's sad that the coach of one of college football's premier programs is setting such a bad example of sportsmanship.

  1. Carroll hasn't really changed his tune re: the BCS. He's maintained since 2002 or so that he doesn't understand what it measures, and that all he and the team can control is their preparation and performance in every game.

Every SC fan I've talked to knows that we laid a stinker in Corvallis, and that compared with a gimpy conference schedule was a big blow to our BCS NC chances. What Pete was bewildered about was how we dropped two spots despite blowing out a (miserable) FBS team 56-0. The frustration he was expressing was "What more could we have done!?" which is a fair enough question since again no one can explain in detail what the system is supposed to be measuring.

    1. Every coach is in favor of a playoff. The 119th ranked team's coach wants a 119 team playoff. The point is that he didn't call a press conference to complain about it until he was left out.

    2. Caroll didn't "call" a press conference to complain about it. He was asked about it in the regular weekly press conference, and rather than answer with the usuall "we don't controll that we're gonna focus on beating [insert foe here]" answer he actually paused to give a comment worthy of a sound byte.

    3. Oh please, Carroll's not stupid. Except for Mike Gundy, these coaches are as slick with the press as a presidential candidate.

He might as well have called it to announce a playoff. He knows that he's not going to get any publicity discussing which linebacker has a sore pinky this week. He knew how much publicity he would generate with the "stinks" comment.

  2. Right at the beginning you make your argument not valid by beginning with erroneous facts. In 2004 USC was the one left out of the BCS. LSU and OKlahoma were let in despite Oklahoma being blown out by Kansas St. in the Big 12 Championship. Pete Carroll has been consistent of his dislike of the BCS from day one and I as one Trojan fan have been as well, not just now like you suggest. Check your facts before posting your obviously anti USC bias comments.

    1. Thanks for the history lesson. What about the other 2 years?

  3. Lets just stick with the BCS! The system that never really determines which team is the best team at the end of the year. Cry baby? Name one coach that has criticised the BCS when his team was in the championship series! Your name calling Sir is an outrage!

    1. Can't argue with you. They are all cry babies. And so are their fans, who want a second chance after they've already been knocked out. I guess when you get your playoff you'll want back into that after you've been eliminated.

  4. Caroll has said since 2002 that biased voters and computers shouldn't decide who plays... why would you complain if you are undefeated anyway's???? That makes no sense. No offense dude but you just don't like USC and Pete Carroll... if you don't want a playoff go ahead and write that, if you don't like USC go ahead and write that but if you are going to criticize him you might want to look up his history.

Who's the only coach at a big time school that doesn't vote in the coaches poll??? Pete Carroll. Why? He said when he took over the job at USC he didn;t like the system and didn't want to be a part of biased and unfair ranking system.

    1. Every coach is for a playoff. Coaches want has many chances as they can get to turn their teams around. They would rather have a 4 out of 7 like pro baseball and basketball if you asked them.

It's the timing of his comments that is unsportsmanlike.

Yes, I'm against a playoff. See here:

  5. First off what is "ALL" this crying you are talking about? Pete Carroll was asked his opinion and he made ONE statement about it in reply to that question and now somehow all he and every USC fan does is whine about the BCS. Nice revisionist history. When Mack, Brown, complained, Tommy Tuberville, complained, Urban "Whiner" Complained all was fine, but now when Pete Caroll finally says something he and all USC backers are whiners. As I said your anti USC bias is obvious!

    1. I've got no axe to grind against USC. I'll make the same post when the next "left-out" coach or fan starts whining and crying. which they are sure to do. Just because other people do it, doesn't make it good sportsmanship.

How about you don't lose to a 24 point underdog next time? And if you do, at least put up a little fight.

I think he should say "Hey, I know our conference isn't as competitive as it usually is this year and we don't have the same opportunity as SEC teams and Big 12 teams to post enough quality wins to get considered for the NC game. But this my fault. I take responsibility for the Oregon State loss. This is the second year in a row I've let our team and fans down. I'll do better next year."

That's what's called manning up and keeping it real. Instead, he's crying like a woman.

    2. Lou,

So, write an article about Urban Meyer when he makes the comment that the BCS should be blown up in 2006, because he was in effect engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct. It is unsportsmanlike because, as you say, Carroll's timing made his unsportsmanlike, so Urban Meyer's own comments should be so also since he did that during the last week of the 2006 season. But as a Gator fan, I don't think I'd see you calling out other Gator fans as crybabies. Or Texas fans in response to Mack Brown's Rose Bowl lobbying in 2004. Or Tommy Tuberville's comments about how the BCS is unfair to teams that start low in the polls. You can just throw the blanket over all of Auburn's fans and call them crybabies, too.

I think Lou is just jealous USC and needed an outlet he doesn't have anywhere else.

      FIGHT ON!

  6. They're about as bad as a Big Ten fan... They have this sense of entitlement...

  7. By the way Lou,

I find it ironic that you like to cast a wide net and call USC fans crybabies but in fact your picture is of John Wayne.

John Wayne is remembered as a true icon of the cinema but is just as well known for being a USC student and member of the USC football team. Even before Will Ferrell and all the other big names who roam the USC sidelines, there was John Wayne supporting the USC football team long before any of us were even born.

    Funny, indeed.

    FIGHT ON!

    1. Rod, I give you a lot of credit for still being out there posting. Usually you "fight on" guys are only around when your team is in the NC hunt. I can't tell you how many Penn State "fight on" dudes disappeared last week.

  8. Pete Carroll.....Winning percentage......#1......Nuff said

  9. USC one BCS National Title....Nuff said they are not the dynasty that they think they are!
